the former, counta no less than forty in-
dividuals who indulge in that habit.
I From the various sorts of arsenic the
white arseuic, or ratsbene, is mostly
taken ; less so the commercial yellow, i
and still less the natural red arsenic, or
orpiment The arsenic eaters begin
with a dose the size of a millet, and in-
crease this quantity gradually to the
dose of the size of a pea, the weight
of the quantities being 0.22, 0.56, and
0.62 grains avoirdupois, respectively.
These doses ar either taken daily, or
every other day, or onlytwice a week.
The ratsbane eaters belong mostly to
the lower classes—wood cleavers, sta-
ble grooms, charcoal burners, and wood
warts. They fall ino that, habit at the
carly age of fifteen, and coptinue it un-
til the ages of seventy and serenty-six.
Although the female sex if ,9ot averse
to it, the majority belong to the male
sex. They are generally strong and
healthy persons, courageous, pugna-
cious,and of strong sexual dispositions.
The reaon of this habit fa yery, prob-
ably attributable to the fact of its ap-
parent favorable action upon horses.
I f requested to explain the reason of
their indulging in it, they will Bay that
it is to make them strong and healthy.

A Ship Found in a DESEBT.—The
Yuma Desert, in South-east California,
is supposed to have once been an ocean
!•! It is full of galine lakes, one of
which recently disappeared, and a
party » f Indians reported the discovery
ot a "big ship” where the lake had
been. A party of Americans went to
the spot and. it is said, found the
wreck of a large vessel imbedded in
the sands. Nearly one-third of the
forward part of the shipis plainly visi-
ble The stump of the bowsprit re-
malns, and portions of the timber of
teak lie perfect. The wreck is located
t rty miles north of the San Bernar
dino and Fort Yuma road, and thirty
miles west of the Los Palmos, a well
known watering place on the desert.

THE CHIVALBT.— Manifestly recon-
struction has little affected the social
amenities which were the very soul of
Southern chivalry. The chivafry them-
selves, like those other noble savages,
the red men, are fading away. The
remnant of them, since deprivation of
their property in human chattels, are
changed. They are in a frayed, out- ;
at-the-elbow condition. Their weather-
beaten, broad-brimmed hats—sombre-
rux, as they delight to style them—no
longer gracefully shade, but dilapi-
datedly droop . over their gleaming,
blood-shot eyes. Instead of imported
Partages they smoke cheap domestic
cigars They drink villaiupus liquors,
and, altogether, wear an air of decay.
But they swagger as of old, swear as
many big oaths, and religiously adhere
t * th.1 high old sense of honor, accord-
ing to which nothing is so dishonora-
ble as the exercise of common sense in
the aljustment of personal mi sunder-
rdai. ;

Turn your attention largely to the
cultivation of the soil ; it is your
father’s calling, and you can succeed
