Plans underway to return show to Rusk
BBB supporters
attend meeting
A meeting to bring back the
Boxcars, BBQ & The Bridge wag
attended by 2 3 interested Ru sk
citizens Feb. 7 at the chamber
office.
Spearheading the gathering
were Carol Dilliard and Linda
Hassell. "We are here to see
what we can do to help the Texas
State Railroad," Mrs. Dilliard
explained to those attending.
Mrs. Hassell praisedDr. Moles
McCall's speech at the Jan. 24
chamber of commerce banquet.
"He motivated me. If you were
not there you missed hearing a
wonderful speaker, she said.
"We have a lot of people
worried about losing the rail-
road. This is a way to restart
something that shouldn't have
been stoppedin the beginning,"
Mrs. Hassell said. Branson,
Mo. began with one production,
"Shepherd of the Hills." This
little town of 5,000 per sons has
a population of 300,000 during
the tourist season, she said.
They have many plays now, not
just the one. Ifwe aren't going to
do something then we won't, be
anything," Mrs. Hassell said.
Rusk did "Boxcars, BBQ &
The Bridge" for three sum-
mers.
The product ion began after
Jerry McDonald saw a play
" The Bridge," written by Randy
Moore> local playwright. Mr.
McDonald and his wife, Mr.
Moore and Mary and James
Holcomb met together and
decided it would work.
"We all worked hke dogs and
the last year the production
was heldit won the TexasMain
Street Tourist Award," Jerry
Parker said.
There was a board of 10-12
people in town, who met to pull
assets together to get people to
ride the train, see the play and
eat barbecue at the park.
The production was held at
hat time to keep the Cherokee

Civic Theatre afloat, said Davy
Whitehead. Mrs. Holcomb said
in 1972 the late Zula Pearson
wrote a play with basically
the same story as Mr. Moore's
play.
The group discussed where
to have the play. The new high
school auditorium was sug-
gested and Rusk ISD Super-
intendent Dr. Jim Largent
said the school would work
with promoters in making the
auditorium available. The use
of the downtown theater was
also discussed. The summer
show would interfere with the
children's theater in July.
Debra Richards, president
of the Cherokee Civic Theatre,
discussed the possibility of
moving the children's program.
Others suggested that both
productions could be held at
the theater at the same time.
A talk with the director and
the civic theatre board will be
forthcoming prior to any deci-
sion on the matter-
Mr. McDonald, who headed
the production's publicity
before, said there is not enough
time to get ready for this
summer. "You will need at least
50,000 brochures and contact
should be made with every
newspaper, radio station and
Your home is your tax castle
Owning a home offers many tax-cutting opportunities. As you know,
you can deduct mortgage interest and property taxes annually. But
there are many other tax breaks, some related to using your home
for business, others for renting out your vacation home, and a major
break that lets you sell your principal home tax-free. For tax planning
