Texas state bash March 4
By Don Wallace
Staff Writer
The Rusk Chamber of Com-
merce will host a birthday bash
to end all bashes.
The chamber has set March
4 at 1:30 p.m. as party time
for what is hoped to be one
of the largest celebrations in
the state.
"We should have the biggest
bash since Texas is always
known as the biggest state,"
Stephanie Caveness, event
chairman said.
The party will be to not only
celebrate Texas Independence
Day, but the grand opening of
the season for the Texas State
Railroad.
Special events include a con-
test for the best birthday cake
and a locomotion dance that
will snake around the park.
Event organizers are asking
in toce ste dpersonsto volunteer
to help create an event that
will become an annual kick-off
Celebration for the Texas State
Railroad's spring season.
The cake decoration contest
will feature participants from
around the state. The proceeds
will benefit the Friends of the
Texas State Railroad.
Chamber s of commerce, state
park friends groups and orga-
nizations from 11 East Texas
counties are participating in
the half-day party, although
anyone who wishes to enter a
cake can do so.
Mrs. Caveness said, "The
winning entry with the best
cake will get to host the event
next year. Hopefully Rusk will
be the best.
"People need to come out and
see what is going on in East
Texas," Mrs. Caveness said.
" They can have a good time and
find out what is happening in
the community."
Mrs. Caveness said another
purpose oftheparty is to bolster
the Texas Parks and Wildlife
Department. Recent budget
shortfalls have led to layoffs
and reductions at the Texas
State Railroad in Rusk and
Palestine.
"We're squandering our heri-
tage, people died to protect what
we have in Texas. For Texas to
be the 49th ranked in budget
per capita is terrible. We need
to be telling everybody far and
wide about what Texas has to
offer.''
Mrs. Caveness said she
had no idea the Texas parks
system was so poorly ranked
financially.
"If I didn't know about the
low Texas budget, then lots of
people didn't know. But it is not
too late to get with the program
and boost the Texas parks sys-
tem," Mrs. Caveness said.
"We need to get as many
people as possible involved,"
Mrs. Caveness added. "The
more the better, not just the
same old ones. We'd hke to
have a good turnout and I think
we will."
Clemons
on ballot
Administrator eyes
county7 judge post
Alto city administrator Billy
Clemons recently announced
that he will be seeking the
position of Angelina County
Judge.
Mr. Clemons, who was hired
as administrator for Alto in
July, said he will not give up
his present position unless
elected.
"I can't campaign really I have
a job here with the city of Alto.
I haven't raised any money for
my campaign," Mr. Clemons
said. "But my name will be on
the ballot."
Mr. Clemons, 57, saidhefirst
considered the decision when he
heard about the retirement of
present Angehna County Judge
Joe Berry.
"I have known him for years,
he's a good friend of mine. I
thought I might give the job a
try." Mr. Clemons said.
"The position pays about
three times what I am making
now and it's a four-year term. I
am currently year-to-year with
Alto," Mr. Clemons said.
Mr. Clemons said his desire
to run for office was bolstered
by friends and supporters in
Angelina County asking him
to seek the post.
"I have been approached by
lots of people,. Many of them
said I should run and that I
was the most qualified person
for the job. The job would be
down close to where I live," Mr.
Clemons said.
Mr. Clemons was a state
representative from 1983 to
1997.
He also served as mayor of
Groveton for five years and
has been on the Central school
board in his native Pollok.
Mr. Clemons said, "I have had
dealings with county govern-
ment. I have a good working
knowledge of the job. I have 22
years managerial experience."
Mr. Clemons, a republican,
will face Wes Suiter in the
upcoming primary.
Democrats filing for the
position and on the ballot will
include Johnny Weismuller Jr.
