Lost child is found, thanks to
sheriff's office, search and rescue
Baytoum
Tom Townsend of science
fiction and pirate fame has
written a compelling story of
World War II, but the setting
is Bavaria at the beginning of
Hitler's rise to power: It's called
"Gypsy Prince: War Horse.''
When Brunhilda, at almost
thirty years, drops her lastfoal,
Karl feels a special affinity for
the small colt. He determines
to bottle-feed and train him,
in spite of Josef the old stable
master 's opinion that he would
never amount to much. The
colt's parents were war horses,
pulhng the big guns, but this
little runt will only be able to
pull a beer wagon.

for himself. He has to force -
feed him with goats' milk and
continue to do hisworkfor Josef
who is a hard taskmaster for
the stable boy who is a proud
member of the Hitler Youth.
Karl is uncomfortable hear-
ing Josef's diabribes against
the government and knows he
is duty-bound to report old Josef
for his disloyalty to Hitler and
the Nazi Party. But at sixteen,
Karl is conflicted about inform -
ing on his old mentor.
Against her husband'swishes,
the baroness names him Gyp sy
Prince even though gypsies are
held in even lower esteem than
Jews. Karl continues caring for
Gypsy Prince along with the
Hospital, Vernon Campus.
Workshops provided RSH staff con-
tinuing education units towards needed
ongoing education requirements.

other larger horses.
Uta, a young, skinny girl with
big eyes and Deiter, another
stable boy, tease Karl about
his attention to the small colt.
The reader suspects that Uta
and Deiter will reappear into
Karl's adult hfe,
Karl on Gypsy Prince and
Deiter on Tanzer are requisi-
tioned for this new kind of War
called Blitz Krieg, "Lightning
War.'' They find themselves
headed East even though the
Fuhrer has signed a peace
treaty with Russia.
War does its disillusionment
work. From Karl's and Deiter s
Hitler Youth ideaology to the
gut-wrenching sight of the
wanton destruction of a Russian
village, Townsendputs us there
with the two naive boys. It is
reported t hat ten million horses
died in Germany's assault on
Russia.
After a series of unbelievable
coincidences, Gypsy Prince's
hfe comes full circle, back to
Bavaria and his beloved pas-
tures and forests.
Tom Townsend has a unique
talent for visuals: moonlight
bathes the floor with pools of
pale light: their water buckets
froze, and their breath became
thin silver clouds: she looked
like a scarecrow escaping from
the garden: a strange, ghostly
quiet settled over everything,
and with it came the scent of
fresh death.
The author puts the reader
inside Gypsy Prince s head.
With just the right touch, we
view the world through a hor se's
eyes and feel the emotions of
his love for Karl and his hatred
for the destruction of the war: A
book for any age horse lover.

I would like to thank the
Cherokee County Sheriff's
Department and the Cherokee
County Search and Rescue
team, as well as family, friends
and strangers who showed
up to help and support in find-
ingour 11-year-oldAutisticson,
Robby, on Aug. 7.
He wandered off Sunday
morning at about 9:30 a.m.
Our family looked for him for
about 45 minutes and then I
went in and called 911, they
connected me to the Cherokee
County Sheriffs Department,
who immediately came to our
home with search dogs.
They had a job to do and they
knew how to do it. With each
minute that ticked away our
hearts hurt a httle more,
I really admire Chris White
with the sheriff's office. He
came with a job to do and he
never forgot that.
Among all the people who
came to help, each had their
own opinions of what needed
to be happening. Chris kept
his cool and just concentrated
on his job at hand.
As more pohce and rescue
workers arrived with the same
calmness it was reassuring that
they would find him, and all
we could do was hope it would
be in time.
About five hours after Robby
wondered off, the rescue
team along with their awe-
some search dogs, had found
hi live.
He had walked two miles
away from home. Without the
help of the Cherokee County
sheriff's office and the search
and rescue teams, we prob-
ably would have had a tragic
outcome.
I can't even begin to name
or thank all of the people
who were involved from the
sheriff's department, search
and rescue* family, friends
and even strangers.
So to all of you who gave me
my son back, there is no amount
of thanks that I can say that
would be enough.
All I can do is say thank you
from the bottom of my heart.
