was at 4 p.m. Friday at the
Jacksonville First United
Methodist Church with the
Kov. Spencer Plumley and
the Rev. Jim Reeves officiat-
ing. Burial with Odd Fellows
graveside rites was at Jar-
ratt Cemetery. Arrangements
were under the direction of
Boren-Conner Funeral Home
of Jacksonville.
Rev. Dawson died Feb. 7 in
East Texas Medical Center
Tyler. He was born July 26,
1934 in Jacksonville. He
graduated from the Course
of Study at St. Paul School
of Theology in Kansas City,
Mo. He was a member of the
Texas Annual Conference. He
was named Texas Conference
Pastor of the Year for the year
2001.
At the time of his death he
was serving as pastor of Per-
ryville and Union Ridge United
Methodist churches.
Rev, Dawson was a past
grand master of the IOOF
Grand Lodge of Texas, 2003-
2004. He was the noble grand,
of William Tell IOOF No. 27
in Tyler, and his other lodge
memberships included IOOF
No. 66 in Mount Pleasant,
Cherokee Rebekah No. 165 in
Jacksonville, Rebekah No. 220
inMineola, Tyler Encampment
No. 19 in Canton-Tyler No. 7 in
Jacksonville Ma sonic Lodge N o
108, AF&AM and Eastern Star

employed with MTI Inspection
Services, but had also been a
radio personahty including a
guest hosting of K K US The
Ranch show several times in
the past years.He had worked
at KTLÜ-KWRW radio in
Rusk and IvEBE-KQOI in
Jacksonville periodically
throughout the past 25 years.
Merv also was a District
Manager for Farmers Insur-
ance Group in Bryan for three
years and was an agent for
Farmers Insurance Group for
several years. He also served
as a lieutenant colonel in the
Texas State Guard and served
as a Cherokee County reserve
sheriff 's deputy. He played the
steel guitar and was an avid
sports fan attending andbroad-
casting for many high school,
and college football, baseball
and basketball events for
many years. He had the honor
of broadcasting the Indepen-
dence Bowl in Louisiana.
Survivors include his wife,
Mary Moore Dawson of Tyler;
two sons and a daughter-in-law,
Mark Jason Dawson of Tyler
and Matthew Scott and April
Dawson of Dixon, Mo.; three
grandchildren, Thad, Austin
and Myrinda; one sister and
brother-in-law, Glenda and
Doyle Wells of Tyler; one
brother and sister-in-law,
Donald and Berna dine Daw son
of Jacksonville; and several
nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Jonathon
Ardis, Rudolph Poe, Edie
Daniel, Bayne Cauthron,
James Daniel and DeMarcus
Over shawn.
Honorary pallbearers were
members of Odd Fellow and
Rebekah lodges.

Maness, 80, of Rusk will be at
11 a.m. Wednesday at the Wal-
lace-Thompson Funeral Home
chapel with the Rev. Everett
McCollum officiating. Burial
will be in the Atoy Cemetery.
Mrs. Maness died Feb. 13 in
Maydelle after a long battle
with Alzheimer's. Shewasborn
March 11, 1924, in Lilbert.
She graduated from Rusk
High School and Tyler Com-
mercial College. She played on
the state champion basketball
team for Rusk High School in
1941. During World War II,
Mrs. Maness worked on the
Army base in Greensboro, N.C.
where she taught soldiers how
to knife
Mrs. Maness retired from
Jacksonville Savings Bank
after 30 years of employment.
She was a lifetime member of
Beta Sigma Phi master chap-
ter making her induction to the
sorority in October 1978. She
served on about every commit-
tee in the sorority and served
the longest as secretary until
1993. During her yearsin soror-
ity she was extension officer,
president, secretary, girl of the
year and Valentine sweetheart.
She was awarded the Order of

Alto and Athens many years.
She was a member of the Alto
First Baptist Church. She was
valedictorian of her graduat-
ing class at Bryan High School
andgraduatedfrom Henderson
County School of Nursing with

born April 24, 1924, in Troup.
She was a homemaker and a
member of the New Life Pen-
tecostal Church.

a son and daughter-in-law.

ity Cemetery at Wilmer.
Mrs. Baxter died Feb. 12
in a Jacksonville hospital.
She was born March 6, 1932,
in Emmaus. She was retired
from Sears Roebuck and was
a PBX operator at Rusk State
Hospital. She was a member of
the Hallman Baptist Church.
Preceding her in death were

and grandchild, Timothy Aaron
Watson.
Survivors are her husband,

(Bunkey) Fitts and Dorothy

Rusk resident and a member of
the Rusk Fir st Baptist Church.
He was an employee of IvLTV
in Tyler as a news reporter
and a former staff assistant
at Cherokee County Mental
Retardation Agency in Rusk.
In earlier years, he owned and
operated Gary s Record Shop
in Rusk. He was a collector of
histories of fire departments
throughout the county and
had an extensive collection
of data.
Survivors are two aunts,
Maxine Lindstrom and Joan
Smith, both of Tyler; an uncle,
Frank Denton of Carollton;
seven cousins, Lowell Denton
of San Antonio, Brent Smith
and Neal Smith, both of Tyler,
Jay Lindstrom of Dallas, Lloyd
Denton of Istanbul, Turkey,
Karen Garrett of Whitehouse
and Laura Hill of Kansas City,

Mr. Felder died Feb. 11, He
was born Sept. 19, 1926, to
Joe and Mary Lottie Felder
in Alto. After World War II he
graduated from Sam Hous-
ton State University with a
bachelor's degree in agricul-
ture. He received a master
of education from Stephen F.
Austin. He began his career as a
second grade teacher at Spring
Branch. He was prinicipal of
several junior and senior high
schools. He retired from Spring
Branch ISD as superintendent
of curriculum for 40years. Sur-
vivors are his wife of 59 years,
Maxine Felder; brother and
sister-in-law, David and Ruth
Felder of Hope, Ark.; son and
daughter-in-law, John Marcus
and Kim Felder of Houston;
three grandchildren, Kimberly
Jo Felder, Faith Elizabeth Elhs
and William Joseph Felder.

received her masters degree
with Beta Sigma Phi, which is
the highest rank in the sorority.
She resigned from the sorority
on April 2, 2002 because of her
illness.
She was a life-long member

odist Church, a member of the
order of the Eastern Star and
the Cherokee County Shrine
Club. She was a volunteer for
the Good Samaritan, Meals on
Wheels, theliteracyprogram at
Rusk Primary School and Rusk
State Hospital.
Preceding her in death were
her parents, Adron and Nellie
Wade; a sister, Inis Parmley;
two brothers, Charles and
James Wade; her husband,
Lucious (Luke) Maness and a
son, Terry Maness.
Survivors are her daughter.
