Voters must do homework before going to polls
TAMMY LAWSON
Rusk
In this time of presidential
primaries and campaigning
we, as Americans, have to deal
with candidates who think the
person with the fewest horrible
marks will be the winner.
Unfortunately, that is not
always wrong.
In times like these, instead
of looking into how each person
stands on each issue, who votes,
who shows up to vote and how
each person votes, we watch tv,
see campaign ads (which are
sometimes j ust short of slander-
ous) andhsten to people who do
not always know any more than
we do. As voters exercising our
rights, we have the responsib-
lity to be informed voters.
Insteadof listening to how the
new pre scription bill is lacking,
let's look at what existed j ust
prior to its passing.
Instead of hstening to how
horribly we are doing in Iraq,
let's look at what existed just
prior to that war.
Instead of hstening to Con-
gressmen complain about the
American deficit, let's look at
exactly how those same people
voted on our current budget -
it is, after all. Congress that
determines our budget. Our
president simply submits his
recommendations, and then
gets continuously criticized by
the Congressional leaders that
actually approved the deficit.
I ask that all reading this
make sure they are registered
to vote, become informed and
vote for the person of his or
her choice in each office. I
also ask that this newspaper
print articles informing voters
of what is being discussed at
the local, state and national
levels of government, and
who is voting, and how each
is voting.
I trust that if we knew one
of our Congressmen was not
showing up to vote on even half
of the issues at hand, we would
not put him back in office. This
information is public informa-
tion, but many people do not
know how to access it. So if the
mecha would do this for us, it
would be greatly appreciated.
I am not asking anyone to vote
as I do. I am however, asking
people to both vote, and know
who and what you are voting
for when you do it.

Donations needed for Veterans marker at Courthouse
BETTY BOWDEN
Rusk
Most of us know that the
VFW/Aux. Post 3406 and the
American Legion have been
holding fundraisers and work-
inghardto establish a veterans
monument on the Courthouse
lawn.
Many area citizens have made
donations, some have been very
generous, but all have given
from their hearts. Like the 94-
year young widow, now living
in Mesquite, who wrote: " I'm
writing in regards to the Vet-
eran Monument. I was thrilled
to see something was being
done after all these years.'' ...
"I take the Cherokeean and saw
the Monument picture I think
it is so pretty he (referring to
her husband) was a WW II vet.
Will be glad to help.''
There are a lot of people who
agree that it's past time to honor
our Veterans. InMayonMemo-
rialDay 2004, the National WW
II Monument in Washington,
D.C. will be dedicated.
Wouldn't it be great if the
Cherokee Co. Veterans Monu-
ment (for all veterans) could be
dedicated on that day as well?
If everyone who had a loved
one, a friendor a neighbor who
served or is serving in the mili-
tary would each donate $10 (or
more), then a monument befit-
ting our Veterans couldbe dedi-
cated on Memorial Day.
My grandfather fought in
France during WWI, my father
did his part in the invasion of
Normandy, my husband was
Stationed in Korea, my brother
chopped into the hellholes of
Vietnam and our granddaugh-
ter is currently stationed in
England.
Like thousands of others, the
people we love continue to do
their duty to keep us free and
they always will as long as
there is an America and there
will always be an America as
long as there are those willing
to fight for her.
I've made my contribution to
the monument fund in honor of
family member s who are veter-
ans and I challenge everyone to
clo the same in honor of your
veterans.
It's time we did our part by
supporting and honoring all
those who serve - our veter-

If I had to guess, I'd say the
Texas State Comptroller's office
is practicing unsafe Hex, and
haslet a virus (MyDoom) attack
the machines used to distribute
its newsletter list.
It needs to aucht itself, and
report back to us on why it
flunked this important IchI.
how it's correcting the immedi-
ate problem, whatsecurity mea-
sures will prevent a recurrence,
and what inchviclual employees
will be held hable for negligence
and financial costs in aclchtion
to the state itself.
As a matter of personal opin-
ion, this should be treated aS
criminal negligence under
various state computer crimes
laws where the malicious code
was resent, and a form of hbel
for passing off list subscriber
names and addresses which
have been inundated with
reports from other subscrib-
ers' ISP's about malicious
code it chstributecl forging our
names.
Of course to the extent pos-
sible, the upstream source of
the virus should be traced,
and anyone involved by neg-
ligence of malice held liable
under applicable criminal or
civil law, and by being tarred,
feathered or pilloried with a
choice of torture implements
for anyone passing by to test.
