At today's session of the meeting
of the Daughters of the Republic Mr*.
Margaret Churchill of Burnet pre-
sented the organization with an his-
toric Lone Star flag of Texas, which
was used in 1836 by a company or-
ganized at Zanesville, Ohio, bry her
father, (’apt. Anthony Deffenoaugh.
The flag has been in the Deffenbaugh
family ever since the war for Texas
independence. The meeting will con-
clude late today with the election of
officers.

Next Wednesday, April 30, the pres-
ent City Council will come together in
the council chamber, possibly at 4
o’clock, and before the hour of 5 o'clock
arrives it is the intention of the body
to adjourn, therewith turning over to
the ikcoming council the reins of Aus-
tin’s government.
It was stated at the city hall thls
• morning that’ the new members will
not qualify until the following morning
(Thursday), the time for the regular
weekly meeting of the council. To-
morrow is regular council day and will
be, therefore, the last regular meeting
indulged by the present body.

The story opens in a cabaret on the
Great White Way and here Miss Ben-
nett is seen as an entertainer—a new
role for the demure little star. She
weds a Westerner to escape the life she
leads, and which is repellant. But she
finds she has only jumped from th*
frying pan into the fir*. Her husband
proves to be a dissolute brute.
From there on, the real drama fol-
folws, and for sheer tenseness and
thrill this picture has seldom been ex-
celled. The ending is happying, but
the heroine experiences many vicissi-
tudes ere that time comes. The sup-
port is artistic.
Following the meeting of a special
committee in the lobby of the Gunter
Hotel in San Antonio to lay out tenta-
tive plans for the afternoon meeting
and the two sessions Tuesday, all of
the war veterans attending the con-
vention were made goesu of the city |
and extended many courtesies, such as
tickets to severai theaters, a Mexican
dinner and paasea to the San Jacinto

It was clear at the outset of the
convention that 60 per cent of all of-
ficers and committeemen were to be
former enlisted men and that the or-
ganization would be temporary, final

Company E of the Ninth Texas In-
fantry, Texas National Guard, received
a grade of excellent when inspected
recently by Major Roffe of the U. S.
army. This was the only infantry
company in the brigade that was ao
highly commended.
It is expected that full clothing
equipment will be received for the
company this week. This will include
the regular uniform issued to regular
army recruits: A supply of rifles will
also be furnished, together with a
quantity of ammunition.
Edwin L. Richter was elected cap-
tain of the baseball team recently and
a practice game will be played this
afternoon at House Park. A regular
game has been scheduled with a team
from the postoffice for Sunday after-
noon at the same place. There is con-
siderable interest being manifest in
btls sport, and th equipment recently
purchased by the company fund is be-
ing used to advantage.
On last Saturday a special drill was
held for twventy-six members of the
company Who live in the country. They
were also measured for their uniforms
will not in any case be increased beyond the fixed

will have no other effect than to show the confi-
dence of the people and their anxiety to promote
the suecess of the loan flotation.
Individual subscriptions for amounts up to $10,
000 will be allotted in full, while subseriptions for
larger amounts may be sealed at the option of the
Treasury Department, according to their priority
or extent, to keep the loan within the limit.
Warning has been given that if any interests
split up their subscriptions with a view to combin-
ing them afterwards, and thus make sure of getting
more than might otherwise be awarded them, the
Treasury reserves the right to reject or to scale
such subscriptions, if there are not enough of the
securities to go around. The small investor* are
to have the preference, much as the larger may
be appreciated, and much as they may be needed to
make up the great total of subscriptions. For the
last preceding Liberty Loan there were more than
twenty million subscribers and it would be ex.

tition of the Attorney General, re-
straining nine Houston men from sell-
ing in:oxicating liquors in violation
of law. The petitions allege that de-
fendant* have been operating saloons

tion. The dominant note in the pur-
poses was that the organization would
seek to keep alive the associations
made in the Great War, that it would
favor the building of substantial pub-
lic buildings as memorials, where the
former soldier* could meet and frater-
nize, that it would devote itself to
the task of finding employment for
all returned soldiers and that it would
give expression to the ideas of Texans
on the future military policy of the
Government and that it would bo l

A North American Indian who had
"paid in full’’ with an arm, was a
brave marcher in the San Antonio
procession on San Jacinto Day. To
a reporter he said, "I buy more bonds
to help Government pay heap big
debt.”
Mrs. Carrie Christian, daughter and
mother of a soldier, bought bonds at
Shreveport yesterday. Her boy was
attacked by six Hun planes. He
brought three down and was wounded
by a shell which killed his observer.
Pinned beneath the machine, he es-
caped with his life and walked yes-
terday with hi* devoted mother to
register the last effort of this noble
family to make the world safe.
Frank M. Smith. Federal loan di-
rector, interviewed today, said: "Not
