A & B KOSHER Market and Delicatessen
By RABBI ISADORE GARSEK
Once again we are prepared to
celebrate our High Holidays. Our
High Holiday season is both seri-
ous and joyous. It is serious when
we consider our past. It is serious
when we examine our deeds and
foibles of the past year. It is joy-
ous when we consider the hopes
and dreams of the future.
The greeting of “Happy New
Year” is a readily and joyously
exchanged. We feel that a new day
is dawning and a new world is
in the making. We gain courage
from the thought that once again
we start with a clean slate.
t I do not wish to be pessimistic
nor to deflate our hopes and
dreams of the future. But, I would
that we realize the true situation
as it confronts us.

Rabbi Glarsek
For what is new in the new
year? Surely, the days and weeks
and months will pass in their regu-
lar succession. The weather will
change according to its season.
The sun, moon and stars will work
in their allotted times. Natural
phenomon will follow its usual arid
habitual design and plan.
What’s new in the new year?
Surely people will be born, and
people will depart from this earth.
There will be problems and ob-
stacles, and some solutions. There
will be goals and ideals, and the
attempt to reach them. Some will
experience failure. Some will ex-
perience success. That is not new.
That’s always been life.
What’s new in the new year?
Actually there is nothing new in
the new year itself. The division
between the old year and the new
year is an arbitrary one invented
by man. It is a division that has
proven scientifically convenient.
But there is no magic in a new
year that will dispell all ills. There
is no therapeutic or thaumaturgi-
cal elements that come automati-
cally with a new year to cure all
ailments and dissolve all empedi-
ments. There are no mechanical
devices introduced by the new year
which will eradicate the evils of
the old year.
What’s new in the new year?
