Hay
Producers wanting to enter a hay
sample in this year's hay show may
do so by bringing a square bale or a
garbage bag (full) from a round bale,
to the County Extension Office in
Rusk.
Additional sites are being arranged
in Jacksonville as they have been
the past two years. Announcements
will be made soon about where these
locations will be.
Forage tests will be provided "free
of charge" for all entries. This pro-
gram is an excellent way to have you
hny tested and help the youth at the
same time. A Hay Sale will follow
the show, with proceeds going to
benefit the youth in the county. Last
year, we were able to provide six (6)
college scholarships with monies
raised. Please make an effort to
enter this year; we need your sup-
port.
Results of forage tests will be kept
confidential, unless it is very high,
in which case, we figure you wouldn't
mind us telling people. Therefore,
do not hesitate to bring in a sample
because you "think it isn't very good."
That is especially the hay that needs r
testing! Call 903-683-5416 for more
information.
This space could be
yours!

EVERY DAY... VARIETY OF
"HEART-HEALTHY" FRUITS,
SALADS I
June has been an exciting month
for several Cherokee County 4-H
members. Seven 4-Hers started the
month off right by attending Dis-
trict Leadership Lab. Timmy
Bartlett, Wells 4-H; Chassi Smith,
Wells 4-H; Rebekah Bear, Alto 4-H
Michelle Pinkston, Lookout 4-H
Melody Kelley, Trailblazers 4-H
Melissa Hassell, Lookout 4-H; and
Brandon Wilson, Trailblazers 4-H;
all traveled to Trinidad to spend
three days learning leadership skills
that they have carried back to their
4-H clubs.
The second week in June was also
full of 4-H opportunities. Melissa
Hassell and Michelle Pinkston
earned the right to compete at Texas
A&M University at the Texas 4-H
Roundup with a method demonstra-
tion and did an outstandingjob. They
won fourth place. Tiffany Johnson,
Trae Glover and Chassi Smith, all of
Wells 4-H club; and Steven Kahla
from the Alto 4-H Club, also spent
the week at 4-H Roundup. They
participated in a leadership program
and are prepared to spend the next
year providing leadership training
for people in Cherokee County and
surrounding counties.
Rachel Bolton of the Trailblazers
4-H Club was another 4-H member
who received a high honor in June.
Rachel entered the state 4-H pho-
tography contest and won first place
with one of her pictures. Her win-
ning photograph will be displayed at
the Texas 4-H Center in Brownwood.
Forestry Camp was certainly a
learning experience for some of our
4-H members. Tiffany Johnson,
Michelle Oliver, Leah Cartwright,
Veronica Cartwright, and Suzanne
Oliver from the Wells 4-H Club; Mate
Tarrant and Will Tarrant from the
Vineyard 4-H Club; Brandon Wil-
son, Rachel Bolton and Christine
Capizzo from the Trailblazers 4-H
club; and Melissa Hassell attended
the three day forestry invitational in
Lone Star.
July promises to be another fun
month for 4-H members. On July
13, Cherokee County will have their
annual Day Camp. 4-Hers will be
traveling to Sulphur Springs to the
Southwest Dairy Museum. Then on
July 25, we will be having a club
officer training for all the newly
elected 4-H club officers.
Anyone interested in finding out
more about the 4-H program in
Cherokee County can call or come by
the Extension Office in Rusk. Ex-
tension programs serve people of all
ages regardless of socioeconomic
level, race, color, sex, religion, dis-
ability or national origin.
