The William Roark Chapter of
The Daughters of the Republic of
Texas met Thursday, June 8, in the
Southern Motel in Rusk for lun-
cheon and business meeting. The
Chapter was honored to have
present Mrs. Billie Averett of
Palestine, who is the retiring
President General of the
organization. Mrs. Marion Bolton,
president, resided.
Mrs. Averett gave an account of
Alto student
named to honor
Alto student Karen Grace Selman
was named to the Tyler Junior
College President's List for the
spring semester.
To qualify a student must com-
plete a minimum of 12 hours and
have a 4.0 grade point average (all
A's).

Chapter had received five awards
and that she and Mrs. Henry Rose,

Roark Chapter had each received
several awards from various sour-

Representatives which was written
by Karyne Conley, H.R. No. 1084
which stated clearly objects of the
Daughters and many of their ac-
complishments. '

Jeffrey May, Interior Com-
munications Electrician (IC) 3 has
been promoted to 3rd Class Petty
Officer. He received the news when
his ship reached Hawaii on June 12.
He will be on a six month west-
pack. His home port is San Diego,
Calif. May is a 1987 graduate of Alto
High School.
His parents are Vicki and James
May of Alto. Grandparents are An-
nie Ruth and Sherman May of Alto
and Jim and Myra Freeman of
Lufkin.

SFA students
from Cherokee
named to roll
Three students from Cherokee
County are among 145 at Stephen F.
Austin State University listed on the
president's honor roll for the recent
spring semester.
They include Deann Marie Collins
of Rt. 2, Alto; John Kelvin Griffith
of Alto and Bobby D'Wayne Bolton
of Rt. 2, Jacksonville.
SFA Registrar Gene Barbin said
these top ranking students are those
who compiled an all "A" record
while carrying a full schedule
during the semester. To qualify for
the prestigious honor, the students
had to be enrolled in a minimum 12
semester hours.
Mrs. Collins is a junior in the SFA
school of education, with a major in
elementary education and a minor
in art. She now has been named to
the president's roll twice and to the
dean's honor list on two other oc-
casions. She is a 1985 graduate of
Alto High School.
Griffith is a senior in the school of
education, with a major in
vocational agriculture. He was
named to the president's roll for the
first time. A 1984 graduate of Alto
HS, he is the son of Mr. and Mrs.
Larry Griffith of Alto.
Bolton graduated in May in the
school of fine arts, receiving a
bachelor of fine arts degree with a
major in art. In addition to the
president's roll, he was named to
the dean's honor list four times.
