Mr. and Mrs. Chuck Jowell's
guests Thursday were Mr. and Mrs.
Don Havard of Texas City, who
were enroute to Dallas to visit their
daughter and her husband. The

After attending Sunday school
and church at Old Palestine Baptist

lunch at the Golden Corral. After
lunch they visited their friends Mr.
and Mrs. Miller Basye.
Mr. and Mrs. Alton Marshall

business trip.

came brought food, so that lets us
know that there was plenty of food
with a variety to select from. We
wish for Mr. Mayes many more
"Happy Birthdays" with good
health in between.

The zest for economic develop-
ment in Texas has sifted down from
the largest metropolitan area to the
smallest communities. There are
approximately 1,050 small com-
munities with populations less than
10,000 in TeXas. They account for 31
percent of our state's total
population.
The major opportunity for job
growth in small communities lies in
each community's ability and
commitment to grow the small
businesses already there. In essen-

and money spent to lure a foreign

often more effectively spent at
home.
When companies dre considering
locating or expanding to a com-
munity, they sometimes have
requirements that smaller com-
munities simply can not meet. In-
stead of trying to meet these
demands while competing with

larger cities, small communities
can concentrate on nurturing com-
panies that have already located in
the area and help them succeed.
When these communities plan for
the future, they must keep in mind
that today's small business could be
tomorrow's largest local employer.
Small communities are limited only
by their resources and commit-
ment. If the resources don't exist,
they must seek out programs and
assistance and create them. The
future depends on it.
