Riders for the Saturday
St. Jude Children's
Research Hospital Wheels
for Life Bike-a thon are
now asking Rusk citizens to
back their efforts by
pledging a contribution for
each mile they ride.
"The money our riders
earn will help continue St.
Jude's life-saving study of
childhood cancer that has
become so important to
children all over the
world," said Bike-a-thon
chairman Frances
Turlington.
"We'll be showing that
we care about children by
helping this cause."
"Please support your rider
with a generous pledge,
and then help them get the
funds to us as soon as the
ride is over."
"Each rider will be given
a lap card when they
register at Rusk State

"Every time they ride
through the check point(s),
we'll initial the card. At the
end of the ride, we'll check
it and sign it to show that
the rider earned what the
sponsor pledged." Riders
will then return to the
sponsors to collect the
pledge.
"We'll also be giving
them a hospital bracelet
saying 'I'm riding for
Terry' to wear during the
ride. I'm sure most of them
will still be wearing them
while they make their
collections." Terry is aI St.
Jude patient who represen-
ts all victims of the
illnesses under study at St.
Jude Children's Research
Hospital.
The ride starts at the
Pavilion at 1 p.m.

Beware of Covetousness
One day when Jesus was teaching concerning the
wonders of the kingdom of God, a man broke in to ask
Jesus to make his brother divide his inheritance with
him. Jesus declined to be the judge and warned, "Take
heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life
consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he
posseseth." (Luke 12:13-15) To drive home the
foolishness of stressing possessions he gave the
parable of the rich farmer starting with verse 16.
The ground of a certain rich man brought tremen-
dous crops. In fact he grew so much that he couldn't
store it all, so he decided to build facilities big enough.
When he got through he made a little speech to himself,
"Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years;
take thine ease, eat, drink and be merry." "But God
said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be
required of thee: then whose shall those things be,
which thou has provided?"
Isn't that a sad story. A man works, succeeds and
dies before he can enjoy any of it. But Jesus' ap-
plication is even sadder because it condemns more
people. "So is he that layeth up treasures for himself,
and is not rich toward God." (Luke 12:21) How many of
us are laying up treasurers on earth instead of
treasurers in heaven. That's how many our Lord is
warning about being foolish like the rich farmer. How
about you and I? If God called us in death today, how
would we stand in judgment? Let's be sure He won't
have to judge us a fool.
