Mattie and Cary Langley. Photo by Anderson
What were some of the courting habits you all had then?
Cary: When we started courting we would go to a girl's
house, and we had to have our coat on and we would have to
go in and sit with them. Now we wasn't courting in some back
room. We were sitting in the room with the parents. We'd
sit over here and they would sit over there. Now if we want-
ed to go to church with our girl friend, now we were in front
of the buggy. And the buggy was behind us. That was the
buggy and wagon days. We were in the front and they could
see us. They would drive along behind us and we would walk
to the church. Now we didn't ride to church, we was walking.
Mattie: When I was growing up, I didn't do much court-
ing. I was kind of a scared little girl. I had to stay
kind of close to my mama. When I was 10 or 12, I was scared
to get out then. I was scared of the dark.
