Max Ehrman was what many RngHA professors call
a "minor poet". Perhaps minor because aot,a large
crowd of people read him and lived his «p*ri*n<*«
But no more minor than are you and I. Max Ehrman
wrote one of the greatest pieces of literature that I
have ever read. I have included it in this 00
mental health before, but I include it again far two
reasons Because the first time 1 offered it I assumed
it to be true that it was found in a mkfievil monastery
and 1 toM you that. Well. 1 want to right my wrong and
ta you know that it's creator was a modern American
poet. Max Ehrman. And second because it has within it
every conceivable formula for keeping a
mental health, and it's style is the essence oí the
rhythm of fife. The Desiderata
Go plackDy amid the noise and haste, and remember
what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible
withows surrender, be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and dearly; and listen to
others, even the dull and ignorant; thev too have their
story. Avoid kwd agressive persons, they are
vexations to the spirit If you compare yourself with
others, yew may become vain and bitter; for always
there wiB be greater and lesser persons th w yourself.
Enjoy year achievements as well as your plans. Keep
interested in your own career. howeveThumbte; it is a
real possession in the changing fortune of time.
Exercise caution in your business afffcirs. for the worid
is full of trickery. But let this not bhnd vou to what
virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals;
ad everywhere hfe is full of heroism. Be voursetf.
Especially do not feign affect* Neither be cynical
about love; for in the face of all aridity and
dseachantment, it is perennial as the grass. Take
fcatSy the counsel of years. gracafuBy surrendering
the things of youth Nurture strength of spirit to shield
you in sudden misfortune But do not distress yowself
with imaginings Many fears are horn oí fatigue and
tanhness Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle
with yourself You are a child of the imiveree. no less
than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be
here And whether or apt it is dear to you, no doubt the
umvene is unfolding as it should Therefore be at
peace with God, whatever you conceive him to be and
whatever your labor* and aspirations in the noisy
confusson of life, keep peace with your soul Wtth all its
sham. <hudgery. and broken dreams. R is still «
beaoifUl worid Be careful strive to be happy.
