"We have not yet even scrat-
ched the surface in meeting
the state's neevls for various
kinds of park areas," the in-
terim executive director of
th? Texa*- Parks and Wild-
life Department asserted this
week.
Ron D, Jones, speaking be-
fore a meeting of the Parks
and Wildlife Commission in
Austin, -aid he feels a "de-
dicate.' fun !" earmarked by
the Texas l egislature would
be the a n swer to i neeting the se
needs.
"The public's ha-uc philos-
ophy about parks is beginning
to change," Jone- told the
commissioners."While some
still like highly developed
parks, many Texans are beg-
inning to demand wilderness
area-, trails and other types
of le<s highly developed
parks".
The trouble with this trend
in Jone-' opinion, is that these
more primitive areas fail to
pay for themselves through
entrance fees. The entrance
fees are the only source of
revenue for paying off the
bonds used to purchase new
park lands.
city limits of Jacksonville
and from near the southern
city limits of Jacksonville
to near Spur 62 in Rusk.
E.M. Campbell of Rusk is
the Highway Department
engineer in charge of the
project which will take an es-
timated 60 working days.
Therefore , it is not feas-
ible to use bond money to
buy the^e lands. Jones said
It also is limited in that* it
can be used only for acquis-
ition and development of new
parks--but not for mainten-
ance or further development
of existing parks.
Commission Chairman Pe-
arce Johnson of Austin and
Commissioner Jack R, Stone
of Wells both went on record
as supporting a dedicated
fund.
A dedicated fund would be a
set amount of money ear-
marked by the l egislature
from the general fund, Under
the present system, the de-
partment must ask the I egis-
lature to appropriate funds
each regular session.
This week's meeting was the
first for Commissioner Jack
R, Stone of Wells, who took
office last month. He was in-
troduced at the beginning of
the meeting by Chairman
Johnson.
