The following statement
made by Robert A. von Doen-
hoff candidate for Mayor of
the City of Rusk, has been
authorized for publication In
the The Cherokeean;
Por several years now, a
number of citizens of our
community have approached
me for the purpose of re-
questing me to offer myself as
a candidate for Mayor of'the
city of Rusk. Heretofore I
have been unable to take on
this responsibility because of
other commitments. I now
feel that 1 would be justified
in devotine the pecessary a-
01 RUSK, TEXAS, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 27.1969
present regime of May or Pro-
Tem J. P. Acker, Jr. Both of
their activities have been for
the best Interest of the City;
their administration has been
active; it has been positive;
and it had been progres-
sive; and I feel that it has re*
suited in many long-needed
improvements and changes in
the City administration. Sec-
ondly, the City Council has re-
cently voted certain enabling
legislation looking toward the
establishement within our Ci-
ty of u low-rent housing pro-
ject. I want to say here and
now that I am for this pro-
ject in principle and I would
endorse the action that has
been taken by the City Coun-
cil thus far. It is my under-
standing that there may be
those citizens of the City who
do not approve of this pro-
ject and would like toexpress
mount of time and effort for
• progressive and active ad-
ministration iff should be for-
tunate enough to be elected to
this office.
I feel that I should make one
or two things very clear to the
electorate of this City so that
they can understand generally
my attitudes towards certain
issues and programs now pen-
ding before the City Council
First of all, I want to make it
very clear that I highly
approve of the action of the
past administration both un-
der the leadership of Mr. Rex
Nichols and lastly, under the
their disapproval. I am put *
posely making my announce,
ment for this office of Mayor
so that, should those opposing
the housing project idea wish
to place in nomination another
mayoral candidate, they have
ample time within which todo
so and thus save the neces-
sity and cost of referring the
marter to a referendum or
"vote of the people". I feel
that my election as Mayor
of the City of Rusk would in
this regard be a mandate to
the Council to go forward with
their plans for such a housing
project.
Finally, I feel that any person
who seeks the office of Mayor
should be one who desires to
see our City grow and develop
and to see our business firms
and merchants prosper and to
•■ee our inhabitants of all
classes and all races achieve
such comfort as they are fin-
ancially able to provide for
themselves without the bur-
den of inadequate public ser-
vices. Naturally, any expan.
sion of City services is going
to cost money and, perhaps,
a larger amount than might be
available because of the In-
flationary trend of the time.
I feel that the people of Rusk
want their officers, no matter
whether it be the Mayor or
members of the City Council
be be men or women who
would act with decision, not
straddle the fence on issues
which might possibly be con-
troversial. I feel that public
officials should have the con-
fidence of the people who el-
ect them and they, In turn,
should earn the confidence of
those people from term to
term. Beyond that, the pub-
lic officials shall have their,
hands untied with reference to'
individual decision so long as
they vote for the best Interest
of their constituents. learn,
estly solicit your support In
making Rusk an even better
city than it Is today. Thank
you.
