bank charter Is the most luc-
rative privilege on earth. It
is actually and fundamentally
based upon the credit and good
faith of the U. S„ and without
charge to the bankers whodid
hold the charter. A privilege
of this magnitude and import-
ance should be exercised by
the many in the public Interest
rather than by the privileged
few for the benefit and enrich-
ment of the select few.
The 62 Commerical Banks in
our Fir<-t Congressional Dis-
trict were servicing 265,540
accounts as of June 30, 1966,
with total deposits of over
$368 million. It is interesting
to note that Texas ranks first
in the nation In the number of
commercial banks with 1,444,
whereas California and New
York together (because ofbr-
anch banks!) have only 529
less than half the Texas totall
This Illustrates the effectl-
vess of the Texas Constitution
In helping to maintain an inde-
pendent and competitive bank-
ing system In our state.
