you have a wonderful Christmas.
Mr. and Mrs. Roy Ginn
Tribe,Wants To
Sell Cherokee
Co. To Paleface
It's no cause for striking vour
tepee just yet, but if you're a land
owner in Cherokee County t h o
Cherokee Indians have laid claim
to your land.
The former residents began
beating the drum on Dec. 11, ask
ing compensation for lands they
claim was taken from them in four
East Texas counties, including
Cherokee.
The Indians don't want the land
but they want $1.25 per acre for
that which they say was taken
from them in 1839 — in Smith
Rusk, Cherokee and Van Zandt
counties.
What it seems to amount to
that they are willing to sell Cher
okee county for some $850,000
the going price for 674,560 acres
in 1839.
Gov. Price Daniel has said he
will be glad to meet with the Cher
okee leaders, but it looks doubt-
ful if the county's present occu
pants will be herded into reserva-
tions, or even be called on to re
purchase their lands.
It seems 120 years is too long a
time to get around to claiming
ownership. They probably won'
want to pay back taxes for that
length of time anyway.

The devotional and Christmas

Mrs. Adon Duncan, outgoing
chairman conducted the business
session. New officers were elected
as follows: chairman, Mrs. Phil-
brick; vice-chairman, Mrs. Lois
Henry; secretary - treasurer, Mrs.
C. J. Harkins.
A color scheme of pink and sil-
ver prevailed in the appointments.
Refreshments of congealed salad,
nuts, mints, fruit cake, coffee and
tea were served. The dining table,
covered with a pink felt cloth ap-
pliqued in sequins, was centered
with a two tiered milk glass eper-
