Allan Shivers
Is Candidate
For Re-Election
Governor Allan Shivers an-
nounced this week that he will be
a candidate for re-election as Gov-
ernor of Texas.
H i s announcement followed
weekend discussions with his fam-
ily at their farm home in the Rio
Grande Valley. The Governor and
Mrs. Shivers have four children.
The Governor, who was the
youngest man ever to become a
state senator, has been in public
service since 1934, with the ex-
ception of a two-year tour of duty
in the Army during World War
II. He served three terms in the
Senate and was elected lieutenant-
governor twice. He is seeking his
third term as governor.
The Governor's decision to run
again followed the urging of daily
newspapers throughout the state,
many of which have carried edi-
torials during the last two weeks
urging him to run again, and a
flood of telegrams, letters and
phone calls from supporters in all
walks of life and from all parts of
Texas.
Governor Shivers said he is an-
xious to continue the progress
that has been made during his
administration in state hospital
improvements, governmental ef-
ficiency, prison reforms, educa-
tion and highways. Although more
farm-to-market roads have been
built during the last three years
than during any other three-year
period, he recognizes the need for
still more and better highways,
with emphasis on roads that will
serve school buses and rural mail
routes.
The Governor also believes that
Texas can and must solve its vast
water problem and take steps to
teduce the crime rate. He is an-
xious to establish a genuine, ef-
fective probation system.
Shivers, who wrote the old age
assistance 1 a w while a senator,
recommended to the Legislature
the increase in old-age assistance
that will be submitted to the vot-
ers next November as a constitu-
tional amendment.

Unusual Egg Is
Laid By Leghorn
Hen Last Monday
R. E. Reese of this city reports
a rare phenomena among the
feathered fowls. One of his Eng-
lish white Leghorn hens laid an
egg within an egg, Monday, April
19th.
The outer egg had a hard shell
and contained just the white of
an egg, plus one complete egg,
hard shell, egg yolk and white.
The inner egg was perfectly nor-
mal.
Mr. Reese says he has heard of
double yolks in eggs, and two
chicks hatched in o n e egg, but
never has heard of this before.
Anyone with information concern-
ing similar incidents is asked to
contact R. E. Reese or the news-
paper.
