ine wectric i neater is now
equipped with electric fans which
make it a great deal more com
fortable.
Quite a number of business
houses and residences are now con-
nected with the electric light wires
and using'the electric current reg-
ularly. While there are com-
plaints that the current is not sat-
isfactory in some cases it is quite
likely that all such defects will be
remedied before the city takes over
the plant
The soliciting committee for the
Brownsville Fire Department is out
hustling for funds. It is expected
that in a short time The Herald
will be able to report favorably on
the progress of this committee.
Most of the citizens seem to realize
the vital importance of raising the
needed funds to properly equip the
department in order to protect the
town against fire and nearly every-
one is contributing as generously
as he or sh is able to the move.

As an example of juvenile enter-
prise that of Master Johnnie Han-
na the nephew of Mr. and Mrs.
Hanna is to commended. Though
only nine years old Master John
nie is selling jars of chou-chou
which he has made himself. It is
f excellent quality and shows
that the little fellow has the right
idea for using up the surplus cab-
bage and cauliflower raised in this
bountiful region.
There is no better gauge of the
business transactions of a place
than the amount of stationery and
the quality of Jthe same that is con-
sumed by the business men of .the
town. Judging by these signs the
large orders for letter-heads bill-
heads and envelops received by
Thb Herald job department from
the new towns of Mercedes Ly-
ford Harlingen San Benito and
Donna would indicate that these
places are doing business right
along. When the merchant is too
poor to buy printed stationery and
resorts to the cheaper rubber stamp
it reflects badly upon the commu-
nity in which he does business.
A good many ignorant persons
seem to regard the postoffice as a
kind of bureau of information
where almost any kind of informa-
tion desired may be obtained for
the asking. Most postmasters no
doubt receive many letters of this
kind and most of them are noted-
for peculiarities of orthography
and' composition. One which
was received by Postmaster J. B.
Shary of Brownsville this morning
J will take the premium over all
others for such peculiarities and
more especially on account of the
nature of the inquiries made and
the condition of the writer and his
friends who have evidently never
yet seen a railroad. This queer
specimen was handed The Her-
ald" this mbrningby the postmaster
with permission to copy it. Ex-
cepting the name of the writer the
communication is copied literat-1
ing verbatim et punctuatim be
ting as follows:
