ABOUT Tovra-.
Did you see the eclipse last night?
Don't miss the entertainment to
be given by the King's Daughters
this evening at the residence oT Mrs.
E. Willman.
The Hchooners Lake Austin and
C. H. Moore both 'from Lake
Charles La. with lumber arrived
at Pont Isabel today.
Considerable drift-wood is com-
ing down with the rise in the river
and the pipcros and others are en-
gaged in catching it from the river
bank
Company B under command of
Lieut. Brady has returned from the
target range and Company H un-
der Lieut Baker went out today to
the range.
The Rio Grande railroad has been
doing a rushing business recently
having hauled up 107 cars of freight
from Point Isabel during the past
week or ten days.
It. is understood that the schooner
Beacham will be run hereafter be-
tween this port and Galveston and
that the Brazos will be run from
here to New Orleans.
A good many of our citizens were
rubber-necking last night between
the hours of ten and twelve watch-
ing the eclipse of the moon which
came off as announced.
A rumor is afloat to the effect
that Uriah Lott the well known
railroad bffilder is en route to
Brownsville which has set us all
to speculating on railroad probabil
ities for this isolated region once
more.
The river is on another rise hav-
ing begun to rise again yesterday.
It was nearly twelve feet above low
water today. It was reported as
rising again yesterday at Rio
Grande but today it is reported as
falling fast at that piont.
Two recruits in the rice business
near Brownsville are H. L. Howard
of San Antonio and Albert Sam-
mons who has lately been in bus-
iners here. Messrs. Howard and
Sammons have leased two hundred
acres of laud from C. Lindsay
whose place lies on both sides of
the canal and will begin shortly to
prepare for planting.
The public is cordially invited to
be prcsont at the King's Daughters'
entertainment at the residence of
Mrs. Eda Willman this evening.
Some fine musical selections read-
ings and recitations will be render-
ed and delicious refreshments serv-
ed all of which you may cnjo for
the small sum of 25 cents Mexican
coin. The entertainment begins at
7:30 o'clock.

To the Herald:
Rio Grande City Texas. Oct. 14.
In tarr Count the political sit-
uation is clearing rapidly. On the
4th. the Democrats.Jield their coun-
ty convention and after adopting
resolutions congratulations the peo-
ple on the fine roads and school?
and perfect freedom and order con-
sequent upon the . efforts of the
present county officials renominat-
ed all of them as follows:
Sheriff W. W. Shely; County
Judge J. R. Monroe; County"' At-
torney Knox Jones; County Clerk
Adolph Oosteeveen; District Clerk;
'ni. Lewis; Treasurer J. Guerra;
Tax Collector G. Duffy; Assessor
M. P. Juarez; Inspector of Hides
and Animals Emilio Zarate; and
Surveyor J. S. Monroe Mr. Shely
was elected chairman of the execu-
tivo committee for the ensuing two
years.
There were not les than four hun-
dred men at the convention whom
some thirty were from outside pre-
cincts and the balance from this
precinct. It was the best attended
most harmonious and most enthus-
iastic convention held herein main-
years and very well represented the
prevailing sentiment of the county.
The campaign was opened in this
precinct on the night of the 11th.
when the Club Washington e Hi-
dalgo the local Democratic organiz-
ation elected its new officers with
G-. Duffy as president admitted
seventy-two nev members and list-
ened to the opening guns of the
battle. There is no doubt about
this precinct. Last election the
vote was a tie each party having
420 votes but no one now estimates
the Democratic majority at lass than
one hundred.
"Special to The Herald.
..'--Corpus Christf Texas Oct 17.
The officers here have arrested an
unknown Mexican in the outskirts
. of the-cit' who is .apparently fam-
ished and ill a demented state. 'He
remains cLull and when persuaded
to speak is hardly intelligible. His
name is understood to be Abundio
Bernal and he incoherently speaks
of San Felipe Monterey the mis-
:sfon copper mines and picking
j cotton. He had dh hardly any
clothing when found except verita-
ble rags and newspapers tied on
I his bod. He carried a large
quantity of trash. His age is about
35 vears.

republican convention tomorrow.
It was reported that Ed. C. Lasater
would be here on the 11th. and that
the Republicans would then form-
ulate their ticket. However Mr.
Lasater did not come and the
Republican county convention is
now set for the 18th. There is a
great deal of speculation as to their
ticket but there are no candidates
for places on it the result of the
election being too well assured.
DE AF2STE3S CANNOT BE CURED
by locil applications as they carmo
"reach the diseased portiim of the ear.
There is only one way to cure deafness
and tuat is by constitutional remedies.
Deafness is caused by an inflamed cou-
lition of the mucous lining of the Eus-

flamed yon have a rambling sound rr
niperfect hearing and when it is en
tirely closed Deafness is the result and
unless the inflammation can be .taken
out and this tube restored to its normal
condition hearing will be destroyed
forever. Nine cases cut of ten are caused
by Catarrh which is nothing but an
inflamed condition of the inucuos sur-
