OPINION
Feeling the pain of Christmas
spirit overkill this holiday season?
Here are five films coming out on
the 25th (or the day after) that have
nothing to do with Santa, Christmas
spirit, or anything else you've been
smothered with all holiday season.
Because going to the movies is all
about escapism.
The Spirit (PG-13). Frank Miller
(Sin City) directs this adaptation of
a 1940s newspaper strip comic. A
rookie cop (Macht) is returned to the
world as a crime fighting hero back
from the dead. He is opposed by the
"Octopus" (Samuel L. Jackson), a
criminal intent on destroying the
city and kills anyone that opposes
him. With visual style reminiscent
of Sin City and 300, any fan of those
movies will be treated to a buffet of
vivid eye candy that has become the
hallmark of Frank Miller.
Revolutionary Road (R). This
reteaming of Leonardo DiCaprio and
Kate Winslet chronicles a married
couple in 1950s suburbia. Director
Sam Mendes (American Beauty)
paints a picture of a young couple
with two children unable to feel ful-
fillment in what has become a fagade
of a life. It reexamines the popular
ideal of the American Dream and
what it means to live a happy life.
Waltz with Bashir (R). Israeli
filmmaker Ari Folmon tells an ani-
mated autobiographical story about
himself and his inability to remem-
ber himself fighting in the 1982
war in Lebabnon. While trying to
uncover the meaning of a night-
mare, he decides to interview his
old comrades around the world. As
he discovers more from his friends,
his memories are slowly restored.
With a solid plot and strong visual
influences taken from Waking Life
and Scanner Darkly, this movie was
extremely well received by the inter-
national film circuit.
The Curious Case of Benjamin
Button (PG-13). A film adaptation
of a 1920 F. Scott Fitzgerald story,
Brad Pitt plays Benjamin Button, a
man who ages in reverse. He starts
off as an old man who is thought to
have a horrible disease and appears
younger as time goes by. It chroni-
cles a man living a contradictory life
as he grows in reverse from 1918 to
modern times.
Bedtime Stories (PG). A tale of
how a handyman (Adam Sandler)
tells niece and nephew bedtime sto-
ries that magically come true the
next day. His colorful stories which
he seeks to control toward his own
ends are soon in the hands of his
niece and nephew. The film is a lav-
ish Disney tale that is accessible to
anyone in any age group.
