Ghost 1 own scares up laughs

Dr. Bertram Pincus' cynical
outlook on life makes him one
uncomfortable fellow.
Ricky Gervais plays Pincus with
his trademark witty sarcasm.
It's not the crowds that bother
him, but the individuals within
the crowds.
He has no social skills.
His mode of operation is avoiding
contact with any living soul. That is,
until after he's revived from a routine
surgical operation gone awry.
Now back to life, Pincus is
confronted with another problem:
He sees dead people and they want
his help.

If it sounds reminiscent of the
"Sixth Sense," that's OK. This
movie's humorous view on life
and death takes the audience
down a different route.
The biggest thorn in Pincus'
side is Frank, an adulterous,
egotistical ghost played by Greg
Kinnear.
Frank offers Pincus a bargain
he can't refuse: help him break up
his widow's upcoming wedding
to a self-righteous human rights
lawyer, and he promises to leave
Pincus alone.
Pincus and Frank's styles of
interference clash, leading to
sharp verbal jabs.
But this movie is more than
clever one-liners and gags.
At almost everything director
David Koepp attempts, he
succeeds. From tone to casting,
to music and editing, it works.
This is truly miraculous
because "Ghost Town" had plenty
of chances to go horribly wrong,
but it remains on track thanks
to Gervais' tailor-made role and
witty banter.
Now, Gervais is a master at
awkward comedy, as anyone
who's seen the original British
version of the sitcom "The Office"
can attest. Here, he showcases
his special brand of humor,
playing opposite Téa Leoni, who
stars as Frank's widow, Gwen.
Gervias and Leoni have great
comedic timing, and it's a joy to
watch them on screen together.
You'll be smiling for the course
of the movie, b ut the climax is up
for debate.
Some might find it heartfelt
while others could find it sappy.
But it's so consistently hilarious
that in the end, you just might
die laughing.
The movie also features some
familiar faces: Alan Ruck who
played Cameron in "Ferris Bueller's
Day Off," Aasif Mandvi from
"The Daily Show" and Kristen
Wiig from "Saturday Night Live'"
in great cameos.
With the exception of a few
'F-bombs,' this PG-13 film is
suitable for most audiences and
enjoyable for all age groups.
We give it two thumbs up.

"My Best Friend's
Girl"
Starring Kate Hudson,
Dane Cook and Jason Biggs.
Directed by Howard Deutch.
On the other end of the comedy
spectrum is this R-rated stinker
starring Dane Cook and Kate
Hudson, who have possibly the
worst selection skills in Hollywood.
Jason Biggs, who just 10 years
ago made us pass on apple pie,
gets third billing here as the guy
whose girl dumps him for his BFF.
