entirely the discussion of how this pro-

which is most certainly a matter of
widely diverting opinion among loyal

It is high time that it should be
known. The Statesman is opposed and
has .always been opposed to these off-
reason political agitations. If it is de-
sired and seems practical to submit
a question to the people do so at the
general elections. Don't have so many
electiors. Don't have so much political
agitation. Pass upon the merits of this
prohibition question within the next
ten days if you so will, but fix the
submission and get rid of it as sugested
by the governor, if It Is submitted, for
the next general election and give us
one year free from political agitation.

of various dynamite and powders used
in* blasting coal are being made in a
mammoth boiler plate sylinder which
has previously been filled with gas or
coal duet The cylinder is 100 feet long
and six feet in diameter. Safety valves
have been placed all along the top

those conducting the experiments to
witness the results from an observa-

slvo mixture of fire' damp and. air, or
.coal dust and air, is pumped into the
cylinder and the explosive which is to
be tested Is shot into it from one end
of the cylinder, so that the flame goes
right into the fire damp or coal dust.
Natural gas is used at this station for
fire damp, because it corresponds very
closely to this deadly gas. The can-
cover some method by which this dust
can be prevented from being a serious
menace to the I miners. Experiments

the correction of Dyspepsia, stomach
and nervous diseases.
Laughter, however, in a dyspeptic is
like the memory of running brooks and
shady glens to the famishing and dying
man lost in the desert.
If one could but, know nil tho causes,
reasons and origins of Dyspepsia, one
would not wonder at a half-hearted-
ness of a dyspeptic's gaiety.
There is a ceaseless call for appetite,
food and enjoyment to a dyspeptic,
coupled with a morose, moody belief
and knowledge that such a call is
mockery and if Indulged in will bring
discomfort, pain and regret.
Perhaps if it were understood that
the digestive system, including mouth,
throat and alimentary canal, embrac-
ing as it does the stomach, is composed
of membraneous tissue filled with mil-
lions of small nerves, which control
added millions of little, mouths or
suckers. Perhaps ft this were known
men could more comprehensively un-
derstand that to distrrange such a sys-
torn would mean indeed Intense physi-
cal pain.
Now suppose that this alimentary
(anal is a mass of worn-out, debili-
tated nerves and mouths, .each suffer-
ing excruciating physical pain and
discomfort, and suppose sch a canal
filed with the fumes and foul odors,
and decayed food from the last meal,
and one has a slight idea as to the
lack of laughter of a dyspeptic,

President Roosevelt has further ar-
ranged that all trophies brought back
by the Citizen Roosevelt shall have a
prominent place in the museum and
shall be named "The Roosevelt Col-
lection."
In the meantime, so far as various
views of the situation can develop,
the American people are the only, ones
who Are paying the expenses of the
African trip of Citizen Roosevelt. All
the arrangemnts having been made by
President Roosevelt, of course, the
federal government pays the freight.
The question of moment, is by what
authority does President Roosevelt ar-
range to have the public pay the ex-
penses of Citizen Roosevelt on a hunt-
ing frolic to Africa. In very truth the
most charitable way of answering the
question is that President Roosevelt is
unique In all that he does.
It is to be hoped that the fact that
Tennessee has gone dry woh’t effect
the flow of the Mississippi river.
It is now suggested that they make
Washington city "dry?' That is
eminently proper. There are a good
many members of congress who repre-
sent "dry” districts and talk "dry"
talk, and inasmuch as their con-
stituency is always dry they ought to
be made to stay dry at Washington or
turn their constItutency loose. Go,
whole hog or none, Mr. Politician.
loss of life in the coal mines of the
country, the United States government
is meeting with much success. For
several months an experiment station,
under tho direction of the technologic
branch of she United States geological
survey, has been in operalon at Pitts-
burg. Pa., with tho purpose of discov-
ering the causes of mine disasters and
After the government has gone far
enough in its experiments, a bulletin
will beissued recommending as per-
misslble explosives such as stand the
test. The facte learned concerning
these explosives will be called derectly
to the attention of the state mining
bureaus as well as the operators.
Perhaps itho most Important and
far-reachin, experiments so far at the
stations are those in which it has
been definitely shown that coal dust
is an explosive equally as dangerous
as the deadly fire damp. This has been
a mooted question among mining en-
gineers and miners alike, both insist-
ing that It is impossible to explode
coal dust unless there is gas present.
That tho coal dust will explode in a
mine where there is no gas has been
repeatedly shown to several hundred
operators and miners at the testing
cred that they need a whole lot of
stuffed wild animals to make their Ex-
hibit complete. In order to get this
assortment of wild animals the insti-
tute has made arrangements with
Citizen Roosevelt to secure the same.
Not expecting hm to do so for nothing
President Roosevelt has arranged with
the institute that said institute shall
equip Citizen Roosevelt’s expedition
and defray all the expenses of the trip
the necessary legislation.
