Fundraiser to benefit Fort
Worth community center
<@>
Friday 03.07.2008
By Keela Bearden
Intern
Anyone who thinks downing choc-
olate martinis, disco dancing and
supporting local arts at the same
time sounds like a fun Saturday night
might enjoy attending the Sight and
Sound Fundraiser.
The Fort Worth Community Arts
Center will host the fundraising event
at 7 p.m. Saturday.
Money raised at the event will
benefit the center, said Stephanie
Jarvis, the center's finance and opera-
tions assistant.
Jarvis said the center is funded by
the city, but because the building is
50 years old, much of the equipment
is outdated.
This year's goal is to update the
sound and lighting equipment, she
said.
Jarvis said renovating the building
would ultimately benefit comm unity
members who rent it for events.
This will be the first of what Jarvis
said is planned to be an annual event,
each year updating another part of
the building.
The center is used for many types
of events from weddings to memo-
rials and luncheons.
She said the building is there to
serve the entire community.
"We have everyone from individ-
uals in the community to organiza-
tions to corporate companies renting
it out," Jarvis said.
BOOKS
MUSIC
MOVIES
& MORE
She said the event will be one big
party for everyone to come out and
enjoy themselves.
There will be three dance floors,
each featuring a different kind of
music. Disco music will be playing
in one room with classic rock and
country in two others.
Guests can also lookforwardto the
margarita station, she said.
"Lots of food, dancing and
drinking," Jarvis said with a laugh.
Kathleen Copeland, the program
manager at the center, said the event
will benefit all of the surrounding
community, including NT students.
NT students often use the building
for a variety of reasons, Copeland
said. Master's students sometimes
display their theses at the center,
she said.
One of the main attractions of
Sight and Sound will be the prize
packages auctioned off throughout
the evening.
The packages range from a trip
to Colorado to a planned wedding
ceremony.
Jarvis said the lavish packages are
"really cool things."
Tickets to the event are $25 in
advance and $35 at the door.
Copeland said it is a reasonable
price for the great evening guests
will experience.
The Arts Center is located at 1300
Glendy St. in Fort Worth.
"It's going to be a really fun event,"
Copeland said.

Mer 's golf aims to change fortune
By Ben Gooding
Intern
The NT men's golf team hopes to
end its season-long slump Monday
in Lafayette, La., when the Mean
Green competes in the Louisiana
Classic.
This tournament marks the
halfway point in the season, and
the team always looks forward to
playingin Louisiana, senior Austin
Welch said.
"I like it. It's a good golf course,"
he said. "It's an old style course
with a lot of bends in the holes. It's
a good town to stay in and I think
everyone looks forward to it."
For the last two seasons, the
Mean Greenhas finished 12th in the
Louisiana Classic. However, it has
managed to turn its season around
after this tournament for the last
two seasons. The team has finished
up its last two springs with top 10
team performances in both 2006
and 2007. These seasons also ended
with good rounds in the Sun Belt
Conference Championship with
second and fifth place finishes.
"I hope we can turn it around,"
Welch said. "We have been getting
better and better. It's our number
one priority."
Despite the team's poor finishes
in Louisiana, it remains a golf course
that senior Anthony Broussard
always enjoys.
"I feel like it's a golf course that
suits my game well," he said.
Last season, Broussard posted a
three-round score of 221 and shot
72 in the second round. The Mean
Green ended the tournament with
a three-round score of 884.
"Everybody that's going has
played the course and knows it
pretty well," Broussard said. "We
need to trust what we do and
perform well."
