Softball team finds new
home in $500k stad um
By Abel Prado
StaffWriter
Only a few trucks of cement mix
separate the Mean Green softball
team from a stadium the team can
call its own.
The stands have been put up,
and the scoreboard erected. Only
a few yards of sidewalk that have
yet to be laid are barring the com-
pletion of the currently unnamed
$500,000 softball stadium.
"Ever since we brought a softball
team to NT, it was our goal to give
the players a venue they deserve,"
said NT Athletic Director Rick
Villarreal. "It's great for the girls
to finally have their home field ad-
vantage. It's all of the little things,
a nice padded fence, trees in the
outfield - all of this really helps the
way the wind blows."
Plans for the project began more
than three years ago when Villar-
real spearheaded a fund-raising
effort that has resulted in the com-
mitment of more than $8 million,
leading to the construction of a
new athletic center, a new baseball
clubhouse and the new women's
softball stadium.
Funding was also provided
through loans and a more than
generous donation from an anony-
mous giver whom the stadium will
be named after, Villarreal said.
The women's softball team used

to play their home games at the
Liberty Christian School's baseball
stadium until the university bought
the property and transformed it
into the new softball stadium.
The stadium is next to the base-
ball complex. The new venue
is also expected to enhance the
quality of recruits for the team. A
panel of campus facilitators, which
included Villarreal, designed the
park and subcontracted all con-
struction deals to the best bid, Vil-
larreal said.

and an attempted sexual assault,
said Business and Media Rela-

Nov. 2, Bryan said.
The first assault took place
Aug. 6 in the 1100 block of West
Oak Street. The second occurred
on Oct. 29 in the 1000 block of
West Hickory Street, and the
third, an attempted assault, took
place the same day in the 700
block of Sycamore Street.
Bryan said no other attacks
have occurred.
Victims described the suspect
as a white male with dark hair
in his mid to late 20s, weighing
150 pounds and standing 5 feet
10 inches to 6 feet tall, Bryan
said.
