conflict began
Levin said she
and her crew,
including Jes-
sica Schoen-
baechler, one
of Levin's graduate students,
were only a few miles from the
Lebanon border.
The war between Israel and
Lebanon began on July 12
"when Hezbollah militants
killed three Israeli soldiers
and kidnapped two others in a
cross-border raid," according to
CNN.com.
Forming in 1982 in response
to Israel's invasion into Leba-
non, Hezbollah is considered
to be a "radical Islamic Shiite
group" that plays an active po-
sition in the Lebanese govern-
ment, according to the Council
on Foreign Relations Web site.
Levin said she received fund-
ing from organizations located
in the Dallas/Fort Worth area
and from non-government or-
ganizations out of Israel. She
would not say how much fund-

ing she received or who funded
her film project.
Levin said she is hoping to re-
ceive more funding so her film
can be completed.
She took a trip to Israel last
November to do some research
for her documentary. Levin
wants to broaden the dialogue
on events happening in the Mid-
dle East.
She did get some footage of
the war but not a lot.
"Usually, when I would have
been seeing things, I was hun-
kered down inside," Levin
said.
She said she never had to seek
safety in a bomb shelter even
though missiles hit Nahariyya,
a city in Israel, while she was
there.
~ Levin
Levin said her documentary
will most likely change angles
to include the war's affects on
Israeli women.
While in Israel, Levin's plans
were to interview three women
-one Jewish and two Arab-
Muslim women.
Levin said she was only able
to interview one of the Muslim
women, who lives in Akko, be-
fore she had to return home.
"She's [Levin] an incred-
ibly talented filmmaker," said
Michael Monticino, associate
dean for administrative affairs.
"She's extremely active in her
profession, and she's known for
just doing outstanding work,
high integrity. She's well-re-
garded in the university for
both her professional work as
well as her service to the uni-
versity and the College of Arts
and Sciences."
Levin said
she learned a
lot during her
short stay.
"I learned
that, for a lot
of people, this
seems like a
very political
situation and
that, for some
people, it's extremely personal,
and others just want to live
their life with their families
and they wish that people could
get along," she said. "That was
really nice to see coming from
all sides: Jewish, Muslim,
Christian. They wanted peace.
But it wasn't everybody there,
certainly, but a lot of the peo-
ple I was with did."
Levin is worried about get-
ting another chance to film be-
cause of the current conflict.
"I don't want to put myself in
a really dangerous situation,"
she said. "I don't want to put
my crew into a really danger-
ous situation. Having said that,
am I willing to take a certain
amount of risk, you know, ab-
solutely."
