Padres to remember slugger Caminiti
SAN DIEGO (AP) - The San
Diego Padres will remember
Ken Caminiti on what would
have been his 42nd birthday,
wi th his three daughters and ex-
wife taking part in a pre-game
tribute Thursday night.
Owner John Moores said it
was "an emotional decision" to
honor Caminiti, one he made
on the flight home following a
memorial service for Caminiti
in October.
"ITis girls have heard enough
about Dad's unfortunate death,
and now they need to hear some
of the positive stuff in his life/'
Moores said.
Despite an offseason domi-
nated by steroids, and the cir-
cumstances surrounding his
death, the Padres don't think if s
too soon to honor Caminiti. The
slugger admitted after his career
ended that he used steroids in
1996, the year he became the
only Padres player to win the
NL MVP.
Caminiti, who lived in Hous-
ton, died of a drug overdose in
New York on Oct. 10.
"I think just because of all
the steroid issues that we had
in the offseason, within the first
month to have something like
this might give the perception
that we're ignoring some of the
things that are going on in the
game today, and thafs not the
case," said reliever Trevor Hoff-
man, one of just two players left
from the 1998 Padres team that
made it to the World Series.
"Ifs a situation where we
lost a member of the family in
the offseason. I understand why
we're doing it. If s definitely go-
ing to be good for the girls to
come out and recognize what
their Daddy did and how much
he was appreciated here and
maybe put some good thoughts
m their head, maybe, other than
some of the poor things that
have been written about him."
Caminiti played for the Pa-
dres from 1995-98, helping them
win two NL West titles and an
NL pennant. He was the unani-
mous NL MVP in 1996, won
three Gold Gloves and was an
All-Star twice.
'This gives his three girls a
chance to come back and see
what Dad did, because I'm con-
fident that those little girls don't
remember that much about his
days," Moores said. "Cami-
niti carried the Padres. He did
it with a shoulder that should
have prevented a normal hu-
man being from playing the
game. And he played it at an
extraordinary level, and I want
to remember that."
Despite playing most of
1996 with a torn right rotator
cuff, Caminiti hit a career-high
.326 with 40 home runs and 130
RBIs. He needed reconstructive
surgery in the offseason.
Attending Thursday night's
game against the Los Angeles
Dodgers will be Caminiti's
ex-wife, Nancy, and daugh-
ters Nicole, 8; Lindsay, 11; and
Kendall, 13; along with Cami-
niti's parents, brother and sis-
ter-in-law. Two videos will be
shown, former Padres team-
mates will present gifts to the
daughters and a white 21 will
be painted in foul territory be-
hind home plate.
Kendall Caminiti will throw
out the ceremonial first pitch,
to Hoffman.
The Padres don't plan to
retire Caminiti's number,
Moores said.
"That's no disrespect for
Ken or his accomplishments,"
Moores said. "But I think retir-
ing a jersey is perhaps a little bit
different standard. Ken played
for us for four terrific years. We
won in '96 and '98 with him. I'm
very pleased with that."
Rangers minor eaguer Montero suspended or steroid use
NEW YORK (AP) - Texas
Rangers minor league pitcher
Agustin Montero was sus-
pended for 10 days Wednes-
day, becoming the third
player to test positive under
major league baseball's new
policy on performance-en-
chancing drugs.
Agustin, who has never
appeared in a major league
game, failed the drug test
while he was on the Rangers'
40-man roster during spring
training. He was designated
for assignment on April 2,
when opening-day rosters
were set, then sent outright to
Frisco of the Double-A Texas
League. He is 0-1 with a 5.63
ERA in eight innings over five
relief appearances.
Texas manager Buck Show-
alter said Agustin planned to
appeal the suspension, and
general manager John Hart
thought it was "really pos-
sible" that the positive test
might have resulted from a le-
gally prescribed medication.
"We support him," Show-
alter said before the Rangers
played at Tampa Bay.
Gene Orza, chief operating
officer of the players' asso-
ciation, did not return a tele-
phone call seeking comment.
A 27-year-old right-hand-
er, Montero spent four years
in the Oakland organization
and five in the Los Angeles
Dodgers system before sign-
ing with Texas last Nov. 19.
He began this season with
a 28-22 record and 4.38 ERA
in 28 starts and 234 relief ap-
pearance in the minors, then
went 0-1 with a 7.15 ERA in
11 1-3 innings over 11 games
during spring training with
the Rangers.
His contract calls for him
to be paid at a yearly rate of
$90,000 while in the minors
and the minimum $316,000 in
the majors. The suspension,
which will be served immedi-
ately, is without pay and will
cost him $4,918.
If Montero had tested posi-
tive while on the minor league
roster, he would have been
suspended for 15 games.
Tampa Bay outfielder Alex
Sanchez was the first player
suspended under the new
major league program, start-
ing his 10-day ban April 3.
Colorado outfielder Jorge
Piedra was suspended for 10
days starting April 11.
This is the first season in
which players are penalized
for first offenses. In 2004,
players testing positive for
the first time were sent for
counseling and their names
were not revealed.
