A&M University, despite
being a UT graduate, where he
served for seven years, before
being named a distinguished
professor.
Rafes was hired as part of
Vandiver's new team in 1980
as general counsel. Previously
working in the Attorney
General's office and the UT
system, he was used to struc-
tured interviews and was sur-
prised when Vandiver talked
to him about things not relat-
ing to general counsel.
"I've been here 25 years,
and I thank Frank Vandiver
for that," Rafes said. "He com-
pletely changed my life by
employing me and giving me
an opportunity to work here.
He was the most charismatic
person I've ever met. "
Often staying awake in the
middle of the night, Vandiver
would wake up early and
envision a "hunkered down"
North Texas. In his contro-
versial vision, he believed the
future of the university relied
more in interdisciplinary stud-
ies than in disciplinary depart-
ments.
"We always got along
very well, but that doesn't
mean I agreed with every-
thing he wanted to do," Dr.
Gus Seligmann of the history
department said. "He was a
major scholar, and when he
took the job as president here,
it had the effect of raising
our academic image, simply
because someone of his stature
took the job, it made us look
better, but when he left, there
weren't a lot of tears."
Fred Pole, former vice
chancellor/vice president for
administrative affairs, said
Vandiver was also partly
responsible for generating rap-
port with the Texas legislature.
"If he added honor and dis-
tinction to Rice and A&M, it is
important to reflect on what he
did here," Pole said. "First of
all, he left it place better than
he found it, and he raised the
image of the university just by
being here."
Before Vandiver left NT,
Pole asked his colleague what
he would have done with his
life had he not lived the way
he had. Vandiver replied that
he would be an actor.
"He was an actor who could
have and did play on many
stages," Pole said. "He lived his
life role to the fullest. Whether
you were in a history class or a
Civil War presentation, it was
a joy to be in his audience.
He worked the room with an
almost spellbinding effect with
his quick wit and great sense
of humor."
