Add/drop period extended by two days, payment deadline delayed
This semester, the registrar's office is trying something new to make the add/drop process eas-
ier for students and departments: extending the add/drop deadline by two days.
Students can add a class using telephone or fax or by going in person to the Registrar's Office
from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Thursday and from 7 a.m to 3 p.m. on Friday, without having to go to
their departments for approval.
Students can drop their classes and receive a full refund until Jan. 27.
"Be aware of when you can drop your classes and still get a refund," said Colorado Springs sen-
ior Tony Berger. "Last year, I dropped a class a day too late and lost $350,"

Texas legislature off to a rapid start
AUSTIN (AP) — The 78th Texas Legislature convened Tuesday
for the 2003 session with a mission to write a balanced state
budget, curb rising insurance rates and tackle myriad other
issues.
They have 140 days to complete the job. And Republicans have
been waiting 130 years for their chance to show what they can do.
Rep. Tom Craddick, a Republican from Midland, was elected
House Speaker, making him the first Republican to hold the job
since Reconstruction.
And now that he's got the job, he'll shoulder much of the
responsibility of dealing with a whopping $9.9 billion budget
shortfall.

White House deficit outlook worsening
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Bush's budget chief said
Wednesday that the White House envisions federal deficits in the
$200 billion to $300 billion range over the next two years, a dramat-
ic worsening of the government's fiscal picture since last summer.
Budget director Mitchell Daniels also refused to say when feder-
al surpluses would return, commenting only, "Stand by."

Iraq angered as U.N. teams search palace
BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) — In a move that infuriated Saddam
Hussein's government, U.N. arms experts visited a presidential palace
compound Wednesday in Baghdad, spending four hours searching two
office complexes and opening safes. The visit was the second to a pres-
idential site since the inspectors resumed the search for weapons of
mass destruction in November. Iraq has long resented searches in
Saddam's palaces — of which there are dozens — calling them offens-
es to its sovereignty.
