Dallas has a bogus captain Kldd af-
fair on her bands which will probably
pan out a conspiracy of some confidence
kids to rope In some north Texas greeny
of the avaricious kind.
Tub; cry comes up from nearly every
quarter of the State for a good road law
There Is no one thing that Texas needs
more. Will the Twentieth legislature

Tim long sutlerlng public who were

Judge Manning files his explanation and

detective work of his own. If he Is half
as sincere In his professions of political
honesty and cleanness as bis Texas ad
uilrers Imagine there will be a loud rat
lllng among the dry bones before this
congressional session closes.
Patti sings nowhere In Texas but at
Oalveston. She only cares to hear what
the wild waves'of the gulf are saying
The Oalvestonlan who psys $10 for
his scream will wish be had gone to Ibe
beach Instead and listened to
creaming gulls Instead. Paul Is too
antiquated to scream $10 worth In one
evening.
Till Bulgarian throne has something
too uncanny about It for the average
aspirant to take kindly to. It Is too
much like the old seat of .torture which
crushed the unfortunates who reposed
In It. Alexander got out In the very
nick of time but the Old Nick has been
to pay ever since.
Fort Worth Qazette remarks that the
boomed city which forms the western
suburb of Dallas has ceased paying for
railroads. She would allow the Aransas
Pass to oome In to the big combination
by paying for It. The Aransas l'ass Is
making Its connections all right. When
the smoke clears away we will be belter
able to see bow much progress Fort
Worth has actually made. The Fort
Ira right smart little town and makes
the most of her privileges.
Wilt the state legislators come to-
gether and compare notes It will be
seen that In more states than one the la-
bor candidates are much more numerous
than the democracy deemed tbey would
be Nearly every southern state has
broken Into the democrats ranks wltb
labor candidates. There will be enough
of them in most esses to compel the
bourbons to show their hand on labor
matters and this will be a great gain In
determining matters next eleotlon.
By ruinous arrangement tbe pro-
ceeds of the gate at tbe Dallas State
Fair and Exposition on October 31 were
to .be divided between tbe "Woman's
Home" and tbe "Public Library .n. Nine
hundred dollars have been paid these
Institutions on account and the rest will
follow on settlement. It Is computed
that the exposition brought II-
SOO.000 Into tbe elty of Dallas and yet
San Antonlans hesitate about putting a
few thousands Into a similar organiza-
tion. There Is that wlthholdeth more
than Is meet and It tendetb to poverty.
Tin establishment of Union slock
yards Id this city Is a necessity and
long has been. As our railroad facilities
multiply this necessity grows more ap
parent and the Interest that has recent-
ly been developed In this matter bids
fair to result In something tangible In
tbe Immediate future. Thci yards
would concentrate stook Interests at
this point and compel this city In be ac-
cepted as the center of the stock trade
ot Southwest anil Western Texas. The
yards would greatly benellt the city as
well as tbe stockmen and the move
ment for their establishment should be
mutual. These yards would bo a great
convenience to the wbolo country lying
between this point and the gulf as well
as that to the west and If the enterprise
can be Inaugurated so as to concentrate
all the stock Interests of the city and the
ranches of West and South Texas at
some point whero all the railroads cen
terlng here could reach them by spur
tracks a great advance In the stock
business of this city would naturally
and very speedily result. The stockmen
generally favor the erection ol these
yards but want a bonded system among
the commission men so as tn Insure the
Interests ol tho seller and buyer and so
protect the market and keep the trans-
actions clean. It will shut out n great
deal of Illegitimate and hang-dog busi-
ness which militates against the trado
of this city; closo up the yards and pens
In residence portions of the city; estab-
lish a regular exchange on a square busi
ness basis and prove In every way bene-
ficial to the cattle Interests of Western
Texas. The neaeislty and advantogo of
tbe movement being so generally con
ceded the matter should bo put Into a
practical shape at once. There would
he no difficulty in securing a location
with sufficient grounds centrally situ-
ated as to the railroads and where good
water could easily be obtained and
there Is no better time than the present
In which to reach Ibis result. With the
establishment of union stook yards our
refrigerating enterprise would takoon
new life and with these and the organi
zation of an agricultural fair and live
stook association the stock Interests of
the city would be reasonably secure.
Tbese three enterprises very naturally
dovetail together and tho aitltatlon of
all of them Is perfectly in order at tho
same time.
Qiiovxit has concluded to glvn Oeronl-

Florida reefs where he now pines for

there rapidly enough and the lastono of
them will soon Join the great procession
Into the silent land.

El 1'aso calls for a rounding up of the
tramps on the publlo streets of that city
anil their employment In making those
same streets more presentable The
Idea might be extended. Wltb the Bp
proton of winter the great army of
trumps moves southward. Why not levy
shoe tax on them and give them board
and lodging at publlo expenso hlle
they work out tramp tax on the streets
San Antonio might employ a score or
two to the Improvement of the thor-
oughfares and alleys about town Tbe
tramps are here and It Is work or steal.
If the city supplies them with work on
their arrival and cares for them so long
as they remain there will be less danger
of winter burglars than at present.
Tiik free trade cry of tho democracy
under tbe pressure of the lessons taught
by the recent elections has dwindled
down to reduction of tariff. When con
gress adjourns It will be about where It
Is now. This congress does not Intend
to do anything for fear of doing some'
thing and will naturally elect to keep
on doing nothing to the end of tbe
chapter.

Is not tbe only desirable thing on this

attention of those seeking settlement Is
being turned southwest Instead of north-
west and when the eyes are opened
the Ice bound plains of the northwest
will not recolve so large an Increase of
settlers as now. This southwest has at-
tractions and possibilities that the
northwest never possessed.

ground "that the publication was legiti-
mately news fairly and candidly stated.
Libel laws were made to be abused any-

have lost its advantage every other way.
