A Itcmorknblo Itecord of tho Climo of tho
Three Brothers while Resi-
dents of San Antonio.
About the time that this continent
was rent with the difficulties that cul-
minated In the civil war between tho
north and south a young man named
Kplstacla Mondragon come to San An-
tonio from Chihuahua. No one knew
anything of his antecedents nor why ho
came here but he was an educated Mex-
loan spoke Kngllsh and had a gentle-
manly bearing that made him somewhat
prospecting for a looatlon and ho evi-
dently waa satisfied for be looatcd here
and soon afterward sent for his two
younger brothers. Francisco (the man
wno so wantonly muruereu .jiasuru.
and Jesus. Like their brothers the two
new arrivals bad traits tbat were well
calculated to make them popular. As
far aa can be aacertalned the boys were
at first good citizens but they wero very
gallantjovcrs of women and addloted to
tbo then prevalent vice of gambling but
subsequently tbe conduct of all
Tim three nnorimu
was such as to give them an unenviable
place In tho history of our city.
Eplstacla tbo older brotber made a
record for dlaboneaty and figured aa a
prominent county defaulter. When tbe
feilerala nnl control of matters hero lust
after the war den. Itoynolds appointed
Callxto Nunez to be tax collector for the
county. Nunez naturally appointed bla
uroiner-in-iaw .cpistacia juonuragun
aa deputy collector and as he could not
apeak Kngllsh gave blm obarge of the
olllce. Mr. F. K Totshluaky who had
been deposed by Ueneral Itoynolds from
bis olllce or Justice' of the peace was
then made deputy collector. Although
things went on satisfactorily for a time
It was found some time alter thnt there
was a great deficiency In tho county tax
collector's account. The exact amount
or that deficiency cannot now bo
ascertained; soma say It was $29000
others $38000 and a third statement Is
made that nearly $00000 was missing.
Kplstacla on discovery of tho defalca-
tion escaped to Mexico and as Collec-
tor Nunez laid the blame upon him ho
was generally
ACCIIIEIIITKI) Willi THE CRIME.
The matter was then arranged as best It
could be. Many years after Kplstacla
returned to tbe state. Collector Nunez
was then silent and dead and he laid
the blame upon him for tho de-
falcation. An attempt was made to prose-
cute him but being barrod by tbo
statute of limitation he escaped tbe
punishment tbat It waa tben aald be
richly deaerved. Kplstaclo's crime bow-
ever brought Its own punishment here
for by It he lost caste and Influence
among his people. He attempted a few
years since to run a Mexican paper In
this city known as Kl Hogar but Ignom-
Inously failed and be then lied to Mex-
ico where he now resldea. He married
whilst residing here a Mexican belle
named Tarln the daughter of a then
well-known citizen.
The second brother Francisco who
holds an Infamous place In Texas his-
tory as the wanton and tyrannical
butcher of Itasures too has mado his
mark. Kven whilst here 20 years ago
his bands were wantonly Imbued with
human blood. In March 1880 on the
site ot tbe place where Jack Harris
erected bis Vaudeville theatre was a
prominent saloon gambling bell and bll-
Hard room. This was owned by John
Karl but run by his brother-in-law
l'at Schofleld ; a man named
Wells having subcharge or tbe
billiard room. Francisco was a
frequent visitor to tbe gambling room
and tbe billiard rooms and was reputed
to be an expert gambler. One night In
March 1SC0 Francisco was playing bil-
liards with a friend and by some mis-
chance be mado n rldloulously bad shot.
Among the bystanders who were watch-
ing tbe game was a popular San An-
tonio boy named Charlie Sclietbagen
hair-brother of City Marshal Sbardein
and brotber to Mr. Schelhagen who
now mnnages tbo Nunez Transfer com-
riany. The bad shot made Charlie
augh and the bystanders followed. Tbe
laughter so Irritated Francisco that he
could not play worth a cent and he lost
tbe game and the money tbat waa placed
upon It. Thla maddened Francisco still
further he turned pale with vindictive
rage and gripping bis cue by the small
end he brought the thick end of it down
WITH TEimiFlO FORCE
upon the uncovered heed of Schelhagen
who fell senseless to tbe floor lie
was ploked up and conveyed to bis
borne and tben It was found that
be bad sustained a fatal fracture of the
scull. Br moraine the spirit of tbe un
fortunate Soheihagen bad winged Its
flight to the eternal regions. When
Schlehagen fell and all the players and
visitors were attending blm Francisco
slipped from tbe room and disappeared.
At night the city was excited and search
was made for Francisco but the party
failed to traoe blm. It was fortunate fer
him that they did not. for the murder
was regarded as a dastardly and cow
ardly one and there were friends of
Boneinagen wno would not nave hesi-
tated to have elven Francisco summarr
Justice by banging blm to tbo nearest
tree thus preventing tbo other atrocities
with which he Is charged. When the
excitement consequent upon
BCUEIIUQEN'S MURDER
had died away It was found that Fran-
cisco had fled to Mexico and had Joined
tbe army. Subsequently he was In busi-
ness at l'ledras Negras and for some
time clerked for his brother-in-law Fred
llurobardt who at one time bad a store
at Kagle l'asa. Anow ho passed Into
the army and baa since held aeveral Im-
portant official poaltlona under the
Mexican government. He la reported
to have done tbe Diaz nartv much valu
able service and la a atrong friend of
rreaiuent uiaz.
During the time Francisco resided
here be was married to Miss llurobardt.
tue oaugnteroi a uerman wuo married

The younger brotber Jesus also made
his mark In the criminal history of Han
Antonio and distinguished himself by
stealing a quantity of hoots and leather
from tbe store of J. M. Oarzla VUlereal
