WEDNESDAY. JUNE 2. 1880.
WILL THEY DO IT?
An we to go to prcu to-clay ono of
the molt Important meetings ever hehl
In Man Antonio It In profrrcta. Upon ll
lime will derend the future of thli city
In nomnall tlefffee. With the nicccst
or defeat of Ihe measure there proposed
It lnemrab!y Involved the com-
mercial property of this city for a (fen-
eration to come. This meeting Is the
convocation of the stockholders of the
San Antonio & Aransas Past railroad
to vote upon the execution of a tnort-
iraKu upon the 8B5 miles of railway au-
thorized In their amended charter of
March 31 to secure an Issue of $10000-
COO In In forty years six per cent gold
bonds to bo Issued at the rate of $12000
per mile of completed road. Upon the
meeting to-day binges the Issue of the
bonds for the extension of this
road Into the northwest section of
the state. The construction of this whole
route; the road from this city to tho gulf
so rapidly ncanng completion and the
proposed extension Into the I'anhandle
with Its branches or feeders will do
more for the development of this great
state than any railroad enterprise yet
projected. The work already done has
demonstrated how Important the road
between here and the past Is destined to
become to the stock growers of the
noutheVu section of this state. No read
over opened In the west of the same
length has so good prospects for local
Irafllo before it. None so now and In-
complete has received such patronago as
this now enjoys. With Its extension Into
the northwest and Its lateral branches'
the very heart of the cattle region will
be opened and an outlet made to the gulf
that will pour an Immense stream of
commerce through this section of the
utate benelltlng every market along the
Hue. The cattle and agricultural pro-
duets of all Western Texas would seek an
eastern market over this road. Live
towns would spring up all along the
line to add their commerce to the vol-
ume of our present city trade and re-
store to this mart the prestige she en-
Joyed before the stream of tralllo was
diverted eastward and northward by
other railway lines. The proposed
branch to Waco will open up one of the
very llnest cotton districts of the state.
The shipments of that staple and the
wool clip of the sheep ranches tributary
to the main line will bring no little rev-
enue to the road and the handling of
these staples will naturally Tall once
more Into the hands of our San Antonio
merchants. No richer agricultural sec-
tion It to be found In all Texas than Ilea
tributary to this great artery of trade.
With the opening up of this road the
securing of the best deep water harbor
on the Oulf coast Is rendered certain
and the bulk of Texas produots will seek
an outlet to the east and to Europe
through this port. How far San Antonio
will be benefitted as a olty will depend
upon herself; upon the enterprise of her
capitalist in securing a controlling In
terest in me stock of the new road: upon
her merchants In taking advantage of
tue opportunities offered them for ex
tending their commerce ; last but by no
meant least upon the spirit of Indus
trial enterprise hitherto lacking that
will plant In this city and vicinity thote
manufacturing establishment! to necet-
aery to our development and for which
nature bat made such admirable pro-
visions. The future or San Antonio la
in ber own band l'roperly Improved
the opportunity It at ber door to recreate
herself the commercial and manufactur-
ing metropolis of Texas.
The farmer It buty In bit wheat Heidi
and the politician It looking after hit
fences. The flrtt unfortunately for
Texas findt a poor crop; tba second
fortunately for Texas finds bis fences
eailly out of repair. It It useless to
waste lime In putting them up Light-
ning will' have too many obanoes at
them 'twlxt now and 'lection.
Unci.k Sam hat little to brag of In the
way of a navy but the American yacht
fleet Is asjumlng very respectable pro-
portion! year by year. The late con-
struction! iccm to be clipper and costly at
well as coty. The speed they develop
Is constantly Increasing and the money
spent In building them warmt many n
thlp carpenter'i home. The rivalry In
tpeed and sumptuous furnishing has be-
come a oraze among the young million-
aires and a life on the ocean wavo has
become more than a song with them.
Uncle Sam may catch the spirit of build-
ing ships himself some day.
Tiik Hell Telephone company has won
lit "hello" stilt against the National
Telephone company for Infringement of

Ir Counnoi.i.Kii Hhain's enemies can
And no more serious charge against his
olllclal management than that he em-
ployed an elllclent lady clerk and paid
her good wages his reputation will not
seriously sufler. The attempt of the
malo clerks In the state department to
boycott the ladles seeking employment
and also those persons who are known to
favor the employment of women as de-
partment clerks when they come up for
Qfllce It as unmanly as It It ungenerous.
The average democratic clerk however
has but little spare manhood when' It
comes to a question of olllee at the lilt-
tory of all department tervlce abun-
dantly proves. A clerkship In the slate
house should depend on the ability and
elllclcncy of the clerk and not on his
worth at a rustler at the polls or In
packing a primary or managing a con-
vention. 'J'liKAust'n Optic having twallnned

Mumcii'ai "clarln' up" time seems to
have come In New York and Cincin-
nati; and there be more cities than there
In which the axe might be laid at the
root of the tree of olllclal corruption
without causing a general cry of'wood-
man spare that tree!"
Tiik present drouth In Texas is some-
thing remarkable. In many sections of
the state there waa a very slight rain-
fall during the fall and winter months
and thli spring heavy mint were nat-
urally looked for. In many rlaces this
expectation hat been disappointed.
The spring ralnt did not materialize and
the cry of blighting drouth It heard lu
nearly every section of the state.
Howfara system of Irrigation In the
low lands along the streams might
obviate this tendency to exccsslvo
drouth remains undeinonatrated. To
the farmer these long dry seasons mean
distress and eventual disaster.

What salth tbe Associated Press scrip
tures concerning these things.
Oleomaroaiunk has been a god-send to
this dooless congress. To tackle coin-
age and currency and the tarlir requires
opinions and Is not safe anyway. Pitch
ing Into bogus butter Is another matter
and the oily ense wltb which the aver-
age congressman glides Into this oleagi
nous matter suggests his familiarity
wltb slippery things. It has certainly
been a safety valve for the congressional
gas works.
Okhommo It routed dally but he comet
up smiling arter each round with a rresh
scalp lock In his belt.
Tiik Evening Paper expected for some
weeks past put In an appearance last
evening. Jab. P. Newcomb hoists the
flag to the mast head as editor and Dr.
Undner assumes the management of lit
business. It Is a plainly printed neat
large type tlx column sheet and with
Mr. Newoomb at chief quill driver there
can be no uncertainty concerning its
political utterances. The Light ex-
lends a cordial greeting to Its new re-
publican confrere and wishes all necet-
sory power to Its elbow.
Four Woinii turns Its attention from
railroad building long enough to demur
against the oversight or the city coun-
cil In not providing a park for tbe com-
fort of the little ones during tbe heated
season. San Antonio extends a cordial
Invite to Fort Worth neighbors to come

the refreshing shade and by tho rippling

treats. Tiikuk are a few present and pressing
Issues before tbe etate this campaign

bo altogether forgotten for tbe princi-

18G5 Issue. Thote who have no dead

to tit on tbe fence and tee the procession

Tiik cry already comet from tome
