THE COMING STAMPEDE.
The Waco Kxamlner anil other dyed'
irMbe-wool democratic organs
alarmed and Justly over the threatened
stampede from tho ranks of tho party In
Texas It Is n new thing under the sun
In the 1uno Mar state. Here the sym
hols of party allegiance have ever been
regarded with devout and reverent af-
fection ; here the word of the leaders
has ever been law and the obedience of
the rank and tile a thing fixed and unal
terahle; here the traditions of party
nave ever been held more authoritative
than the teachings of reason or the dic-
tates of common sense ; here for the de
mocracy to will was to do to command
was to Insure obedience ; here where
opposition as unheard of and revolt un
dreamed where the great deity of party
had hitherto been worshipped with fear
and trembling the people standing alar
off; here In democratlo Texas with her
l.O.UUO majority where no republican
darctt lirt bis profane head nor even a
mugwump wall; here the defection ap
pears here tho revolt bas spread j here
In the sanctity of their own ohosen shrine'
and by the hearthstone of their own do-
mestlo seclusion the destroyer has come.
He has ceuie as a thief In the
night. He has come without warn
lng. He has held a convcotloa and not
notified the great 1 am of democracy.
He bas nominated n ticket without per
mission from tue bosses who own the
franchise of the people. He has put bis
unuoiy uanu upon the ark or the democ-
racy to steady Its ulbhlety-wobbletv.
wobblcty-wlbblety movement and the
priests of that people's Jugguruaut car
stand by In amazement waiting for the
profane ones to be struck dead. The
Iniquity was perpetrated In Tarrant
county and the mystery of Iniquity still
works. Already In hair a dozen other
populous centers movements have
been made akin to that In Tarrant
county. There the work done was radi-
cal and thorough. U was not a republi-
can movement otherwise It could have
been borne; It was not a greenback
movement then It could have been
counteracted; It was not a prohibition
movement that the democraoy have
learned how to head oil. Jt was a peo-
ple's movement and many of these
people were democrats. Here Is the guilt
and condemnation or tbelr offending.
It was the people who did It; the demo-
cratic people; the familiar friends ser-
vants and old time tools of the democ-
racy and for this defection there Is alas
no remedy. How are the party bosses
fallen mid the lashes of their whlppers-
In perished! Klfiy-three grangers and
32 worklngmen representing the sub-
alliances and Knights of I.aber assem-
blies of Tarrant county have done this
thing. And now they propose to sub-
mit their aotlon to these alliances and
assemblies and have that action ratified
and so consolidate the votes of these
thousands upon a people's ticket not
representing the bosslsmof democratlo
Inattention to the people's will. This Is
treason In the eyes of the Texas democ-
racy as represented by the Waco Ex-
aminer the San Antonio Times the
Laredo Times and Journals of that
tamp. What condign punishment will
be brought down on the beads of the
Tarrant traitors who hare dared think
for themselves and consult their wn In-
telligence In taking political action re-
mains to be seen. In the meantime the
work of defection spreads and from
overy quarter of the state come those
ominous soands that presage a people's
movement outside of all party lines
such as Texas has never before wit-
nessed but waloa shall no doubt prove
her political regeneration.
The liquor question is one of the big
questions of the day and It Is one with
which there should be no monkeying.
What Is needed In this country Is
knowledge. Knowledge Is the basis of
11 wise action. Knowledge of the na-
ture or alcbollo stimulants and their
effects upon the human system Is Inden.
alble to all Intelligent action concerning
their use. Mere prohibitions do net
avail. The question or studying the na-
ture and effect of all stimulants on body
and brain has been frequently proposed
as a proper branch of the school cur-
riculum but hitherto without result.
The recent action of congress providing
for the study of thesn mailers In all
schools under the control or the govern-
ment Is a move In the right direction
and should bo followed up by the sev-
eral states until all the common schools
of this country shall make this subject
a regular branch of study
Tiik suspicion Is creeping through the
hair ol the Newspeopln that Texas lias n
great many politicians who "are demo-
crats for olllce only." It will ever be
thus so long as a nomination Is equiva-
lent to an election.
'I'm: Living Church of Chicago don't
take much stock In the Jingo style of
pulpit oratory as Illustrated by the Itev.
Hams. In a very trenchant article tho
comparison Is made between the sermon
on the mount by the Qallllcnn peasant
and the sermons at Chicago by the
Georgia lawyer. The closing sentence
of the review Is eplgramatlc "A re-
ligion of gush It contemptible a religion
of slang Is appalling." From this ver
dict there will be no general dissent.
The socialist press In America has

Moiik legislators with a mitloiml rep
utatlnn more Journals properly called
cosmopolitan more clergymen of the
first rank have taken ground In favor or
reduced hours or labor than mio year
since would have been deemed credible.
There Is a deep under current or feeling
setting strongly In favor of reduced
hours or labor greater educations!
facilities for adults and a mure equal
distribution of the profits ofproductloa
This undercurrent will In time sweep
every obstacle out of the way of these
needed reforms and give us a nation of
worklngmen such as the world has never
seen.
M.AXWKI.L outlines his defense agalns
the charge or murdering I'reller. It has
bees In the hands or tho prisoner's at
torney for many months. According to
this statement I'reller died under 51
well's hands while undergoing an oper
atlon for which ho had taken chloroform
narootlc. The trial will be a sensa
tlonal one.
Tub question of contract convict labor
Is challenging the attention or nil sec.
tlonsof the state und nil conditions of
citizens. The present system has row
who are poor enough to do It honor
Itemedlvs as various as the Ideas or
those who suggest them are mooted
and there Is as yet no settling on any
definite course or action. That It will
bo a prominent subject of legislation
next session there can be little doubt
but what the nature or that legislation
will be would tax the energies or any
lnnkee guesting school In existence.
That the oontract system and their em
ployment on publlo works mutt cease
seems to be the general sentiment.
Iloyond that public opinion has not
cryitnllzed.
Tim Is cyclone year In politics as Is In
physical nature. The democratic mate
cyclone In Hamilton county Ohio
which hustled the legislature out of the
stale will cst that same democracy
zo.uuu votes tuts fall.
Tut Houston democrats are not dwel
ling together In that peace and harmony
wntcn should characterize the happy
family In Texas. Unolo Dan'l should
look after his boys and lite hit paddle.
The cyclonic conditions are materially
the same this season as In 1875 when
the south was paralyzed with the extent
and destructiveness of the Georgia
torms which caused a loss of several
hundred lives. Early warm waves fol
lowed by oold ones and excessive rains
were the phenomena then observed.
hat these conditions will not result as
disastrously now as then Is certainly to
do hoped but to whatever extent fore-
warning Is forearming precautions
should be taken. These destructive
storms are generally seen In their ap-
proaches a sulllclent time to afford those
n dwellings ample time to escape to the
cellars or oyclone vaiiltH and some sys-
tem of general warning oould be readily
derived In cities In connection wltheleo-
trlc apparatus that would be as effective
as any human devlsement could be. In
the regions of violent storms in the north
any dwellings havocyclene vaults not
unlike an ordinary bomb-proof In which
to take refuge on the approsoh of threat
ening storms. No one reading the ac-
counts of the late destructive wind-
storms In Kansas Ohio and Indiana but
realizes that sulllclent warning was
given In the;olouds and roaring winds to
nave permitted retreat to places of abso-
lute safety had such plaoes been pro-
vided. The planetary relations this year
