TUESDAY MAY 18 1880.
Tnx whips of tbe democratic party are
at work busy with tongue and tasb en-
deavoring to prevent nay bolting from
tho old party. Allcomblnallona looking
to Independent political action are being
denounced In advance and nil the gods
of the bourbon calendar Invoked to pre-
vent a stampede. The general fidelity
of the democratic party to tbe particular
course marked out by Its leaders la pro-
verbial and this early cry against disin-
tegration sounds quite ominously. Do
tbe Texas democracy feel tbe Arm foun-
dations of thelrdwelllng place trembling
and threatening to movo under tbe new
political combinations likely to arise
and are these warning notes of alarm
real distress cries wrung from the con-
sciousness of danger and tbe fear of what
may befall ? From whatever cause they
may arise the cries are beard and will
continue to be beard louder longer
more agonizing until tbe last ballot Is
dropped next fall and the ancient and
hitherto ununified realize that a polltl-
eal cyclone has parsed through Texas
which was particularly severe In tbe
granger sections.
The little oyclone begins early this
year and holds on well. Like the Texas
candidate It Is a little too previous to bo
welcome a little too numerous for Its
kind a little too self-asserting for tbe
health of the general pnbllo and has al-
together too much wind about It to last
long.
The great dallies of tbe country and
some of the lesser ones are busy cast-

and are striking the balance. In this
the verdict Is decidedly against the
labor organizations and the moralizing
Is Indulged In accordingly. Let It be
borne In mind however that the Trades
Unlens and the Knights of Labor both
took decided ground against any strik
ing to enforce aa eight hour law; also
that they counseled a request for eight
hours pay only In all requests for eight
hours' time. Had tbe counsels of the
union's and the assemblies been followed
there would not have been a strike In
tbe United States for eight hours work
and ten hours' pay. The result only
proves that basty Ill-considered action
by a few worklngmen or even by many
contrary to tbe general advice and wU
dom of the unions avails nothing save
to disturb the Industries of the country

has crippled all British Industries.
The testimony being all In the verdict
of the southern demooratlo Journals Is
briefly dimmed up In this sentence: Jef

ment of the south to-day.

Tn charge of Jndge ltogers of Chi
cago to the grand Jury summoned to
Inquire Into the great anarchist riot ot
May S was very direct and strongly
denunciatory of such Incendiary har-
angues as were Indulged In at the old
Haymarket. Ills charge was to the
effect that the speakers were responsible
for what they Incited others to do. 1 he
men who teach riot and Incite to riot are
responsible for tho riotous acts which
follow and must be so held before the
law and by the courts. Tbe charge will
be approved by every law and order-
loving citizen of the couatry. These
men who unfurl the red flag are tbe Toes
alike of labor and good government.
TiixitE Is one thing made verynppar
ent by Ihe recent red flag demonstrations
In Chicago Milwaukee and Cincinnati;
the red flag Is not the emblem of the
worklngmen of America.
The llsbery question Is likely to be
come a serious bone of contention with
Canada. Another vessel bas been seized
for alleged violation of treaty stipula
tions and tbe end Is not yet. What In
ternational complications may arise out
of these seizures and their disposition
before tbe admiralty court can only be
conjectured. If their Intention be to
force this government Into a reciprocity
with the Dominion It will very likely
fall of Its effect. Tbe United States has
had some valuablo experience In tbat
line which It will not be necessary to
repeat.
The home rule debate la tbe one theme
of press comment In England. Tbe en
tire kingdom Is stirred from center to
circumference and the excitement in nil
circles Is most Intense.
The Beevllle Dee edited anil pub
lished by Messrs. Phillips and McCurdy
at lleevllie. Is the latest addition to the
list of Texas weeklies. It Is a six-
column paper home printed with a
much larger proportion of houie matter
than Is usually round in Journals of Its
class. It sets forth the attractions and
advantages of Dee county In a plain
business way and bids for a share of
public notice In a style tbat will com
mand attention. It Is a fitting represen-
tative of tbe busy little town at the
present terminus of the Aransas 1'ass
railroad grade which will soon be alive

courtesy of a call from Its genial King

very Important addition to the practical

the discussions and essays. These are ;

of this peoullar question. Whatever

religious one like all tbe great revo

and this only Intensities the bitterness
and adds fuel to tbe dames or political

London orangemen are volunteering
by the thousand to help the Ulster men
resist home rule and the prospects of
Gladstone's measures becoming law
grow less and less as the days go by.
