How Emmti Abbott Advertised.
An amusing Incident occurred as the
Einmn Abbott Opera Company came
from the depot at noon to-day. The
frolicsome wind caught the very English
derby which one of the gentlemen wore
and carried It up into the network of
eiegrnnii wires mat center tn the west-
ern Union telegraph oftloe. Before the
owner of the chapeau could reoover
from bis astonishment his bat was fast
lodged on an Insulator and a half dozen
gidd) chorus girls were shrieking with
laughter at his predicament. He ran up
and down the bank steps In a state or
great excitement. A crowd gathered
and grinned and the other members of
the company began to guy him. He
threw his can at It and that too failed
Income down. Then the company col-
lected sticks cobble-stones nnd other
available articles and commenced a
fusllade eo violent that the Janitor
thought the bank was being mobbed
and threatened to call the police. At
last some or the messenger boys brought
n long pole and after futile attempts the
victim of the windy Joke beat a hasty
retreat.
Egyptian Progress.
Ezvnt Is not at a standstill t nni.nl.
It is moving faster for better or for
worse than it ever moved before. And
this Is true of Its antiquities as well as
of other things; the ancient cities are
being In the present day dug away and
their earth spread on the ground as a
fertilizer; and this Is going on at such a
rate that some have almost entirely dis-
appeared already and fields of corn have
taken their place others are diminished
to half the size they were a generation or
two back nnd arestllldlmlnlshlng every
dny. And the time does not seem very
far distant when scarcely a site or a oily
will be able to bo Identified. Certainly
Egypt will have exhausted Its antiquity
fields before England exhausts Its coal
fields. And up the Nile tombs are opened
every year aad fewer left to be discov-
ered. In one sense we are only Just be-
ginning to explore Egypt and the treas-
ure seems to us Inexhaustible but that
Is only because of the puny scale of our
attack from the scientific side; In another
and terribly true sense Egypt Is exhaust-
ing Itself the natives are ceaselessly dig-
ging and unless we look to It pretty
quickly the history or the country will
have perished before our eyes by the
Never heforo has tha( land of monuments

sacked and If or marketable value are
carried oft; but whether preserved or
not Is a small matter compared with the
entire loss of their connection and his-

must be up and doing In the right way.

The principal of the high aohool has
the reputation of being a tine scholar

solitude of his own originality" There
Is another veteran male principal who
was on the examining board nnd who
Is a standard teacher nnd courteous
gent'eman. Some ofthe lady teachers
are highly spoken of for skill and ef-
ficiency. Among the scores of applicants teach-
ers of competency both In scholarship
and power of governing are readllv
round. A blacksmith must have knowl-
edge of his calling so must a physician
or a carpenter. Jiecause n man lea good

ing the horses hold still. Soto be
a good teacher he must primarily have
a knowledge or the subjects be teaches

Funds for the Heathens.
The good old axiom that charity be-
gins at home Is often quoted but seldom
practiced. This Is easily accounted for
thnt home charity Is not nearly so well
advertised as charity for nbroad. While
there are thousands and millions of dol-
lars spent In missionary work in foreign
lands thousands are found under the
shndowsof the donors who are not only
able to read the llolv lllble but are
actually starving. This was forcibly
brought to mind In a recent Methodist
conference where It was proposed to
raise funds for tho heathens when n
E readier had the rourage to state that
e thought that right at home would be
a very good place to spend some or the
charities. There were preachers In that
congregation under the sound of his
voice who were supporting themselves
nnd families on $300 a year who had
figured economy down to four oentB a
day each for the members of their fami-
lies. It Is needless to add that there
was a break In the foreign missionary
movement.

An Artist Terms Too High.
The (art) class (In Portland) sketch
with charcoal from casts and living
models. They are not sufficiently ad.
vanced to do anything with the nude
yet. They pick up men and boys with
strong or peculiar faces and wtmen and
girls of striking types. They drape
them In such costumes as fancy may
dictate or they may sketch the beads
only.
"Do your models like to stand all the
afternoon and be stared all" I asked the
young lady drawing the legs ofthe Dis-
cobolus." "Oh yes for 50 cents" the dryly re-
plied looking up far a moment.
She added : "I made a proposition to
a funny-looking Irishman to come In
and be drawn on those terms the other
day. 'It's too dear mum' said he 'I
kin git me tin-type tuk for less money."'
