fiction. A (janntlty of seed tins been or-
dered by tb Corpus Chrlitl merchant!

enterprise not to be undervalued and it
Is to be Loped that other sections along
the coast may follow the example thus
set.
Till charge that the New York papers
arc worklDC In the Interest of the Hell
Telephone monopoly does not clear the
skirls of Mr. Garland and Mr. I.araar of
the taint of l'nti-ele ctrlc stock. It Is
the general opinion or the Independent
press and that of many or the recog-
nized Democratic papers that this tele-
phone business Insures the return or the
ltepubllcan party to power In IS'.
The attempt or the late ex-Oovernor
K. J. Davis to hold the olllce of Govcr-
noAvrier his term expired was severely
criticized all over the country. What Is
the difference Utttcen the position ot
Governor Davis and Aldermen Gal-
lagher Schrelner and l.ockwooil? The
people elected them ror three years and
not for four. It they want to retain
them In olHce they will say (oat the
polls.
Gii.vi.sTov wants the only deep water
the Democratic convention the only
great dally newspaper the only whole-
sale trading point the female slugging
match the only great boycott the only
original Tom Ochiltree the only great

frauds end yet Is ii'.t happy. To give
It room nccordlngto Its size nnd strength
by all means extend Its limits If It takes
the entire State wllb the Indian Terri-
tory and New Mexico thrown In. lly
no means dwarf Us ambitious spirit.
The great trouble with the Times In
all Its controversies with the I.iniir Is
that the Times is alwajs worsted it Is
not mud-sllnglng when one Is pointed
out the error of his ways and as that la
what the Limit always does for the
Times that paper says It Is not "digni-
fied courteous and argumentative." Uf
course not and this Is why the I.umT
says the Times Is a martyr whenever It
gets the worst of an argument. "Injured
Innocence" Is always a popular role
when ene Is not a victor.
Tuts liepubllcan senatorial caucus Is
evidently determined to bring Mr. Cleve-
land and his departments to time. As the
exponents of civil service reform before
and after his election he has repeatedly
said there would be no removals except
for cause. Men all over the countrr w ere
removed from olllce simply upon parti-
zan grounds but when tho Senate aeked
to see the charges against these officers
they were refined by heads of depart-
ments thereby placing every man re-
moved under a cloud or some olllclal
derelectlon. It Is not understood that
the Senate wants to be captious in the
matter; they only want a fair deal and
want Mr. Cleveland to show by his
works that he has been honest In his
publlo utterances and the Senate I;
right In that line or policy.
Skventkex years ago not a sbovelltilof
dirt had been thrown on the Atchison
T'opeka nnd Santa I'e Railroad. Now it
Is one or the longest in the world and
It Is controlled by ono or the richest syn
dlcates controlling hundreds of miles of
roaas under other names Including the
Mexican Central Hallway. It has Its
eye now on Texas and once within Its
borders It will never stop short of a
coast terminus. Why wojld not the
route from Las Animas Colorado
through the Panhandle via Colorado
City San Angelo to San Antonio and
on to Aransas rass by way of lork
town Goliad and Hockport be
a good one. When the bar of
Aransas Pass lias 20 feet of water
It cannot bo mopollzed by any one
railroad. This Is the most feasible route
by which the Atchison Topeka and
Santa 1'e could enter tLls State and the
Immense cattle trade between Texas
and the great Northwest would be as-
sured to it and it has always been the
favorite among stockman since It were
first built.

Cnrulhcrs editor or tho Corpus Chrlatl
Caller on said mission. In referring to
ibis action the Times Instead of giving
him at least Its moral support and
thereby try tu aid In tho accomplish-
ment or his errand In the benefit or
which San Antonio would be a rail par-
ticipant has I lie following mention of
It. It says:
"Mr. W I'. Carulhers. cdllor nt the

to "advocate the Interest of deep.
water at Aransas I'nsa." It is stated
that he goes "at the solicitation or citi-

zens or Corpus Chrlsll. Mr. Carulhers
has a perfect right to go to Wnahlnglon
as a representative of Corpus Chrlsll

Congress should have been consulted
about the matter. A gentleman of more
experience In public affairs and a wider
ac'iualnlnnce with public men than Mr.
Carulhers has should hate been select-

Tho above Is a fair sample of the
Times' boasted disinterested labors for
the general good of San Antonio nnd
Wist Texas. "My their fruits ye shall
know them." If Ihe editor of Ihc Timet
possesses more knowledge and better
quallllcatlons ror the position let hlmso
announce himself and the I.tuiiT will
cheerfully endorse him for the mission.
It will do more It will devote In-
