SAN ANTONIO AUGUST- 1 G. 1554.
Number 3
LOCAL- PLUMES.
T-"CalIaghanlsm" Is n local "Ism."
Our local Mexican statesmen are all
dressing better than In former years.
The Jail birds who fall to get their
letters better call on Sheriff Moduli to
know the reason why.
The Vaudeville has closed but the
scent of the roses stll' cling to the Demo-
cratic party Hilly Slmms.
The AVhlte F.lephant had n Jollllca-
tlon the other day. The number of
pocket-books the Klephant has tramped
on would fill tho Mayor' ofllce. It's a
great municipal Institution Is theW.E.
.fudge Noonan hat found Republi-
canism and steady habits a turo preven-
tative against the small-pox and tho de-
moralizing effects of the court house
Democraoy.
The Express It seems has a Jail bird
for a local correspondent. The political
charaoter of the Kxpress Is bad enough
without Its being the organ of the
county Jail.
Jose CaBslano Is now an Independ
ent Democrat; tho last time be was a
Democratic Independent.
"Keforui reform" Is the cry of our
"better-tban-thoti" Democracy. We say
reform yourselves and sec how you
like It.
Ills Honor resembles the late Gain'
betta; Major Dwyer looks like Cleve
land.' Some men aro born great some
have greatness thrust upon them; for our
part give us liberty or give us a rest
Tho call for a Democratlo club calls
upon ovcrj'uody to Join In to elect "our
reform candidates for President and
Vice President." Itcforra like charity
better begin at homo gentlemen.
The Democratic party of the nation
Is no better than tho Democratlo party
of tho First precinct; no more honest no
more capable no nioro to be trusted
with tho affaire of the nntlon than the
first ward Democraoy is to be trusted
with the politics of the ward.
Tho call to organize a Democratlo
.Hub Is signed by a very respectable ar-
ray of names but It seems that these
same gcntlcnien have been unable torun
their own county convention. You
want reform? Then drop your Insulting
tauats about reform and ltepublican ras
callty and reform your own locol Derao-
craoy.
Jars In the Hoppy Family.
It has so happened In tho past that
our Democratlo happy family of Bexar
county have been ablo to quarrel but
never to get Into a regular monkey and
parrot set-to.
The virtues of this happy family are
so self-evident that tho generul publlo
must toko for granted that while they
may not show up very well at home
thoy como out grandly on the national
Issues; while the county cage may stlnK
with 'corruption they can lift up their
voices and when the parrot cries out
"reform" they all follow suit; "Cleve-
land and Hendricks" screams tho par-
rot" "Cleveland and Hendricks" shouts
the whole family. Hut when It comes
to giving out the roosts In the county
menagerie then there Is a row; the hap-
py family are no longer the glorious
r-e-f-o-r-m party; they no longer tell the
Itepubllcans that they aro a party of
thieves and corruptlonlsts. UU no; it's
"you tickle me and I'll tickle you"
sung lu the sweetest and most harmon
ious notes.
Tho Democratlo happy family Is di
vided Into two distinct classes; one Is
the highly respectable would-bo olllco
holding aristocratic class generally
prominent ns those who sign calls for
meetings eto. The other class is com
posed of tho common voters who don't
know who Cleveland Is care nothing
about ids eminent social and moral
qualifications and who never made the
acquaintance of "tarlfl'for revenue only."
But these common voters know wno
Bryan Callaghan Is and Thad Smltbf
and Joe Casslano and I ritis Itussl and
possibly Jim French and they have sud
denly discovered that they oan run the
old machine without tho aid or tuat
grand association of would-bo Congress
men Governors and united Mates Sena
tors who sign hlfalutln calls for Clevo
land and Hendricks clubs.
Seriously we are all Interested In the
prosperity of our city and county and
section and State and the deeper we
look Into tho questions that are agitated
tho mora firmly wo are convinced that
the result of our national election will
affect our local prosperity more seriously
than the elcotion of Jim French to the
position of District Clerk or Fritz Until
as Sheriff.
Let the Itepubllcans act witli modesty
and dignity let not the greed for place
control their action nnd when it comes
to making alliance with those opposed
to them let it bo on the basis of no sur-
render of the national standard. The
vote of Democrat Jesus I'ellow Is an
good as tho vote of the would-bo United
Senator If cast for limine nnd Logan and
for protection to American labor and
American Industry. Let us not lose
sight of the great nlm to redeem our
State and District from the rule or ruin
policy of the Democratlo party. Let us
not become the followers of either wing
of the Democratlo family. Let us work
for local reform but not at the expense
of our national prosperity.
" Callaghanlsm."
"Callagbanlsin" Is the new name given
to our county Democratlo machine.
Callaghanlsm" sounds very bad. It Is
true but it only argues that our friend
Bryan has won the confidence of a ma
jority of the Democratlo party and has
been chosen as their leader. Bryan Cal-
laghan belongs tridy to a new genera-
tion; he has been reared a Democrat and
while his Impulsive nature often leads
him to extremes there Is nothing lack-
ing In his composition that goes to make
up the man brave and honest and clean.
He Is called n "boss." Well If the
Democrats have fallen under the man-
agement of a "boss" Uko Bryan Calla-
ghan all we can say he Is n "boss"
worthy a nobler cause.
Tho Oonfodorato Democracy.
The unterrlfitd democraoy of Pecos
and Keeves counties met at Toyah the
other day and In the preamble to their
platform we find the following: "We
hereby deprecate In our national cam-
paign the waving of tho 'bloody shirt'
ami while cherishing a deep and tender
love lor the memory of the dear lost
cause etc." It Is evident that the Pecos
and Iteeves democrats recognize that
the war Is over but they consider the
Demooraoy as tho party of the "lost
cause."
Tub "nest hiding" candidate of the
great reform Democracy Is In the Thou-
sand Islands Incubating his letter of ac-
ceptance. Snaiil Scuunz bad an uphill business
addressing a Brooklyn Independent
meeting the other day. It broke out
with Blaine every few minutes anil
Snarl was glad when it was over.
