What "Truth" Wlliiorismi One Kvenlii
Ilellevuo llospltnl.
"There's a 'stilT'in ward 9 captain" said
one of the orderlies to the captain of the night
watch at llellevue hospital (lie other evening
as Truth was seated in the office. "All right'
replied the captain cheerfully " brine him
down." Two men were sent to the hallway
of tlie office for a stretclrcr which was
placed on the elevator and taken up stairs
A few moments later the elevator was heard
coming down with its ghastly freieht. The
men carrying the stretcher stopped opposite
the office door and Truth saw the outlines cf
a human form under the white sheet.
"He's the heaviest fellow I've had in some
time" said one of the men as he took hold of
the real handles of.the stretcher. "Well this
is the last time he will trouble us" said the
other man as they started acain with the body
Truth watches them as they carried the body
across the hospital yard on the way to the
dead house. It was a clear moonlight night
and as the moon's rays fell upon the while
sheet covering the corpse It brought out the
shape of the body with horrible exactness.
Only a few moments were occupied in plac
ing tne uouy in ine ueau nouse ana me men
returned with the empty stretcher.
The men had been in the office but a short
time and were enjoying a quit smoke when
word came that another patient had just died.
"Will you take it over now or wait until
after suppert" asked one of the men of the
other.
"Well I don't know" he replied: "I sup
pose we may just as well take It now as not."
t hey work you rather lively" said truth
"Yes" said one ol the body carriers.
"Sometimes we are rushed this way; but we
are ueil to it and don't mind it."
The stretcher was again brought into use
the elevator creaked on it? trip up stairs and
presently creaked down again with another
sheet covered body. This was not so heavy
as the other one and no comments were made.
It was hastily brone across the yard and given
a place beside the first body in the dead house.
When the men returned they asked anxiously
if supper was ready and being told "Not
quite yet" sat down lo enjoy another smoke.
Truth judged them to be good honest
kind hearted men a little hardened perhaps
with their constant companionship with the
dead but still warm hearted men.
"hunper's ready." called a female voice in
the hall and the two men who had carried

were soon seen passing the office on their way
to the supper room carrying in their hands
smoking meat and codec.
"Rather a different load from the last one"
exclaimed Truth in surprise.
"Oh that's nothing; muat not be surprised
at that" said the captain. "Will you come
and have a cup of coffee?"
"No thanks" answered Truth. "I don't
care about it just now. Good evening."
