Translated from tlie r'rnvu by l'bocbo
llrewster.l
I have noticed through all time an alliance
offensive and defensive by the moralist and tht
ugly woman against the woman of easy virtue.
These with the desire of injuring the lady of
easy virtue accuse her of exercising an evil
influence over the salaries and heritages ol
young men . These poor people (the moralist
and the homely woman) ignore that it is pre-
cisely the charming role of the lady of easy
virtue that restores to the mass of Laborers the
money which the capitalist makes as his profit.
The day that France succumbed to the
triple coalition of EnclUh gold the Russian
cold and the failure of the grain crop who re-
established her in six weeks? Of the 1500-
000 francs of indemnity France was forced to
pay those to whom she paid it did not retain a
cent of it. It equivalent went to these charming
ladies on whom the soldiers of Europe threw
away their gold. And it was not the moralist
and the ugly woman who restored trade and
brought capital into the country.
A Habit l'ecullitr to IV.uien.
Now Yorktiiin.
A man at one of the Fulton Ferry windows
on the New Votk side at noon yesterday
looked at two coins that a proud beauty had
E laced upon the black walnut board before
im and pcicciving that they were moist
said: "Merciful heavens ! what is to become
of a nation none of whose women can take a
few pennies out ol a pocketbook without first
transferring them to her mouth? I have not
kept an eiact count but that's about the
thousandth woman who has done that to-day.
About four out of every five that pass through
the rate are certain to do it. What makes me
madder than anything else is the age at which
they begin. More than hall the little girls of
six or seven years of age have the habit and
it comes as natural to women of older growth
as it does for them to turn and look at one
another's clothing."
The Duke lie Twuliij;.
In those days it came to pass that Johnny
!Uuke de Twohig tried to play it on Jimmy
Count of Converse). Now Johnny was pos-
sessed of many lots and was baldheaded.
Thereupon he said unto himself: " Yea
verily will I cajole the count into building his
depot upon my lands ; then will I raise my
lots unto $200 and bust the railroad." There-
upon he smote his thigh and was tickled
mightily. Now Jimmy who was not a
stranger in the land builded him a shed on the
ground of Twohig and he labelled it "The
Depot" and Johnny raised his lots unto $500
and the railroad busted not for lol and be-
hold 1 Jimmy bought broad acres on the banks
of the great river and will place his depot
thereon and he goeth into the lot business
himself and there is wailing and gnashing of
two and a half teeth in the house of Johnny
he soakelh his head and weeps while Jimmy
placelh his thumb on his nose endwise and
waggeth his fingers lustily.
Healthful llrvuil.
The famous Leipsic physician I'rof. Keclam
' in a late number of the Gesundheit has ven-
tured to say a good word on behalf of newly
baked biead. The majority of old people
dyspeptics and hypochondriacs he observes
say that they can only eat stale bread; they
find new bread too indigestible. The virtue
lie tells them is not in the stateness of the
bread but in the care and thoroughness with
which they are compelled to masticate it on
account of its hardness. The tongue not only
deceives the human race in speaking says the
learned physician; it is a great deceiver in
eating. As soon as the tocgue perceives that
any morsel in our mouth is soft and wielding
we are persuaded that it may safely be
swallowed. No time or labor is spent
on its mastifieation. Hence so many peo-
ple declare that sauer kraut solt cakes
pate de foie gras eel and other favorite deli-
cacies of the Teuton do not agree with them
The professor declares that none of these are
actually indigestible in themselves. As with
new bread it is the case with which they are
swallowed which makes them indigestible.
Stale bread and hard biscuit on the other
hand are not of themselves inherently so very
digestible; but they give the eater so much
trouble to soften them that 'hey are not swal-
lowed until they have been reduced into a fit
condition for that process. Hence the stom-
ach has not that trouble with them which it
almost invariably has with the softer and more
delicate food which has never received more
than two or three turns with the teeth. Itapid
eating and insufficient chewing are the two
worst foe of the majority of dyspeptics and
hypochondriacs.

Come cuddle your head on my shoulder my
dear
Your head like the golden rod;
And we will go saOing away from here
To the beautiful Land ol Nod.
Away from life's hurry and Surry asd werry
Awav from earth's shadow's and cloom.
We will sail off together to a world ot fas-
weather
Where roses are always in bloom.
Come shut your eyes and fold your hands.
Your hands like the leaf of a rose;
And we will go sailing to those fair lands
That never an atlas shows.
On the north and the west they are bound by
rest
On the south and east by dreams
'Tii the country ideal where nothing is real.
But everything only seems.
Come drop down the curtain of your dear
eyes
Your eyes like the bright blue-bell;
And will sail out under star-lit skies
To the land where the fairies dwell.
From the river of sleep our bark shall sweep
Till it reaches the mystic isle
Which no man bath seen yet where aH have
been
And there we will pause awhile.
I wilt croon you a song as we drift along
To that shore that is blessed of God;
Then ho! for that beautiful land
We're off for that rare land.
That beautiful Land of Nod.
