For SBA, it's a small world
By Tracy Cruse
SBA senior senator
Imagine Mickey
Mouse and Lawyers as far as
the eyes can see.
During the first week
of August, more than 18,000
lawyers, law students and their
families gathered for the 119th
Annual ABA Meeting at
Disneyworld in Orlando.
South Texas faculty
and students played important
roles throughout the confer-
ence.
This year, STCL stu-
dents served the ABA Law Stu-
dent Division in elected and ap-
pointed positions including:
Circuit Governor, Lt. Governor
and as Liaisons to ABA sec-
tions. In order to increase the
nation's awareness about
South Texas College of Law, it
is important to have students,
as well as, faculty and alumni
representing STCL at these
national meetings.
Highlights of the meet-
ing included a visit from incom-
ing ABA President N. Lee Coo-
per and confirmed sightings of
U.S. Attorney General Janet
Reno.
First Lady Hillary
Rodham Clinton spoke at a din-
ner for the Fellows of the
Young Lawyers, but law stu-
dents' names were conspicu-
ously left off the guest list.
The Annual Meeting
offered more than 2,400 pro-
grams and, after rushing from
meeting to meeting throughout
the convention, it felt as if we
had attended every one of them.
However, at
Disneyworld you can't help but
have fun and some are even
said to "whistle while they
work."
At the last Annual
Meeting, the SBA set a goal for
South Texas to receive one of
the national awards presented
at the ABA Law Student Divi-
sion Annual Banquet and, this
year, that goal became a real-
ity.
The 1995-1996 South
Texas College of Law SBA
was named Student Bar Asso-
ciation of the Year.
The Law Student Di-
vision Board of Governors
Committee on SBA's makes the
decision based on a twenty
page "application" detailing the
school; the SBA's structure and
activities; the school's ABA/
SBA interaction - including:
ABA membership, circuit ac-
tivities and involvement in
South Texas students Sabrina Dompier, Mike Milich, Barbra Joyner, Chris Samuelson, Tracy
Cruse, Cary Iiigginbotham, Bill Blair and Monica Thompson at the ABA Law Student
Division Banquet.
ABA/LSD competitions; and
the SBA's budget and financial
allocations.
What put us ahead of the other
schools was our huge empha-
sis on community service. Our
efforts culminated in: over 880
volunteered hours, over $4500
in cash donations to various
charities, over 1400 cans of
food and 350 books donated to
Admissions seeks volunteers
A good number of
former students responded to
Dean Read's appeal for in-
volvement in the work of the
Admissions Office.
In that context, if they,
or any other alums, would be
interested in developing a pro-
gram to help recruit promis-
ing new students please let us
know.
At present we are
planning to see if there are
enough of you who would be
willing to contact and talk with
a few applicants to perhaps
give the Admissions Commit-
tee and Office a broader per-
spective than just the applica-
tion, the LSAT, and the GPA,
as well as personalize the en-
couragement of those appli-
cants who seem especially
promising.
Also, on another sub-
ject we have included these edi-
tions of the Annotations in the
Quarterly just to see if we could

The SBA looks for-
ward to continued involvement
in the ABA Law Student Divi-
sion and the national exposure
that follows.
We encourage stu-
dents to take advantage of the
numerous opportunities the
ABA provides.
For example, as stu-
dents, we can participate in
ABA competitions, become
members of ABA sections,
serve in national offices within
the Law Student Division, and
network with leaders in our
areas of interest.
If you are interested in
ABA involvement, contact the
SBA Board of Governors in
room 219 or call 646- 1741.
add a more informal aspect of
the students' (past and present)
world that might be of interest.
If a subscription to the
Annotations would be of any
interest to you, please let us
know.
For the time being, if
you are interested in the con-
tact program or the paper - or
both - you can leave word with
Professor Weigel at the Law In-
stitute for Medical Studies at
646-1769.
