Letters to
the Editor
Calling all witnesses
Dear Editor:
On Wednesday, Jan. 26,
1993, at about 9:45 a.m., a fellow
classmate and I were walking
across the pedestrian crossing at
the corner of Polk and San Jacinto
(the crossing between the comer
of the parking lot and the corner
of the student lounge) when we
were struck by a motorist attempt-
ing to shoot through a malfunc-
tioning red light. We were both
knocked to the asphalt but, luck-
ily, came away with only scrapes
and bruises. At the scene, several
students showed concern and
helped us gather our senses. There
were several witnesses to the
accident, including a few who
gave me their names and phone
numbers. I would like to take this
opportunity to thank those who
assisted us. I would also request
that anyone who was a witness
and who has not already contacted
me, please to do. My phone
number is 521-2623. Thank you.

A professor's thanks
Dear Students, Faculty, Administra-
tors and Staff:
Thank you for the flowers,
cards and warm well wishes you
extended to me after my illness
during the Fall 1993 semester.
Although I have almost fully
recovered, I would be remiss in
my duties if I did not take the
opportunity to let you know how
your concern touched me. I am
convinced that your kindness is
Page 2
one of the reasons I have
recovered so quickly.
I am particularly
grateful to my student assis-
tants who assumed duties far
beyond what was required to
make sure that things ran
smoothly during my absence. I
also thank my fall Property II
class for its gracious coopera-
tion during my illness.
Again, thank you.

A letter to Tina
Out of Asia came she,
Riding the mist beneath the clouds.
Clutching her fist above the shrouds.
We hailed her in America's name.
The stars in the universe threw down
their spears,
And flooded heaven with her golden
tears.
Beauty as gentle as the summer
breeze,
Lovely enough to make a dandelion
sneeze.
This moment was meant just for you.
Your thoughts are moving like the
ocean's high and low tides.
Drifting wildly from side to side.
No sooner than one thought comes
in,
Another one goes out,
Traveling with no purpose or
destination,
Just hitchhiking a ride on the ocean's
big beautiful tides.
Your hair is hung with curls.
Your teeth are strung with pearls,
Come on pretty girl, let's give it a
whirl.
The longer you wait, the more you
procrastinate,
In the end, you could wind up
without a mate.
Today is today.
Yesterday was today,
And tomorrow may be too late.
Please stop smoking!

A letter from the dean
What a week STCL had
By WILLIAM L. WILKS
Welcome back to the new
spring semester. Be happy that
the school did not move to the
northeast or to Los Angeles
during the break.
What a week this has
been. Would that every week in
the semester were like the week
of Jan. 24.
The one moot court
championship that has eluded us
these many moons was the
National Moot Court Competition
sponsored by the City Bar of
New York. This is the competi-
tion in which 160 law schools
compete. After coming out of the
regionals with Texas Tech as
representatives of this part of the
world, South Texas ran through
the competition, finally eliminat-
ing Georgetown and Southwest-
ern in the last two rounds to
become national champions. We
won almost every trophy except
the second place trophy, and not
only did we have a top oralist, but
we had the top brief as well.
Congratulations to team members
Gary McLaren, Mary Ferguson
and Sheila Haddock and to Jerry
Treece and the team coaches.
On the same day, we
received some copies of pages
from The Princeton Review,
which publishes a guide for
prospective law students to aid
them in their selection process. In
a category in which the top ten
their teaching faculty, South
Texas was rated sixth in the
United States. We shared the top
ten with Yale, Vanderbilt, UT,
UVA, University of Chicago and
others. Our physical plant also
was rated in the top ten. It ap-
pears that our reputation is
gaining rapidly upon the reality,
and we hope that everyone soon
will realize what a high-quality
law school we have here in
downtown Houston.
These pluses come at a
time when the various commit-
tees are meeting to begin the
campaign to raise the $25+
million for the construction of
our beautiful new library across
Caroline Street. The architects
have completed models; cam-
paign materials including bro-
chures and a video have been
prepared and we are devoting
1994 to a quiet effort to raise
two-thirds of the amount needed
for the construction of this build-
ing. The committees that met this
week are all positive, upbeat and
eager to begin.
We received news this
week that a breast implant jury
trial will be held in the Joe Green
Auditorium beginning Jan. 31.
The trial should last four weeks
and students are invited to stop in
and observe. You should take
advantage of these opportunities
to observe the trial practice right
continued on page 11
