Death Sentence
Delivered at STCL
In the end, the needle will have
done Richard Lee Beavers in.
STCL students had the opportuni-
ty recently to see state district
Judge Woody Densen sentence
Beavers to die by lethal injection
right inside the halls of South
Texas College of Law.
After hearing the prosecution's
evidence, the verdict was never
really in doubt. Odle's widow,
Judith Odie, testified before
twelve jurors and a rather large
number of student spectators, that
Beavers arrived at the couple's
apartment on the evening of
August 16, 1986 and asked if he
could use the phone. Having
recognized Beavers from seeing
him around the apartment com-
plex, they invited him in. Beavers
then pulled a pistol on the couple
and demanded money. Thus
began the tragic adventure
throughout the night, during
which time Beavers shot and killed
Douglas Odie Jr. at point blank
range. Beavers then shot Mrs.
Odie knocking out her eye in an
attempt to kill her, and then left
her to die.
With the weight of the evidence
overwhelmingly in favor of the
state, the jury convicted Beavers
of capital murder on Friday,
September 9th, 1988, leaving open
the only real question in this trial:
Would Beavers get the death
penalty? Defense attorneys David
Jones and Randy Smith, both of
Houston, tried to paint a picture
of Beavers as a young man whose
life was controlled by drugs and
Board Chairman Names
Dean Search Committee
Houston, Aug. 26, 1988 - A
committee has been appointed to
evaluate and recommend
nominees for the position of dean
and president of South Texas Col-
lege of Law, Elliott A. Johnson,
chairman of the Board of
Trustees, announced today. A
dean and president is expected to
take office in August 1989, upon
expiration of Dean and President
W.J. Williamson's term.
Professor R. Hanson Lawton
will chair the dean search commit-
tee. Other members are Benjamin
F. Bailar, Dean and Professor of
Administration of the Rice
University Jones Graduate School
of Administration; South Texas
Assistant Professor John H.
Bauman; South Texas Alumni
Association President Oían J.
Boudreaux; South Texas Pro-
fessor and Director of Continuing
Legal Education Sandra L.
DeGraw; Professor and Associate
Dean for Academic Affair; W.
David East; Assistant Professor
Helen Bishop Jenkins; Associate
Professor and Director of the Law
Library Ann Puckétt and Pro-
fessor Charles J. Weigel II.
The committee will convene im-
mediately to conduct a nationwide
search for an outstanding in-
dividual who can serve effectively
as the College's chief academic
and executive officer. The com-
mittee will seek to recommend at
least three qualified candidates to
the Board by the end of the fourth
quarter of 1988. The Board of
Trustees will appoint a new
dean/president to assume the
responsibilities of those offices
before the beginning of the 1989
term of the law school.
"The men and women who will
serve on this dean search commit-
tee are known to be of exemplary
character and judgement, and I
have every confidence that they
will present to the Board can-
didates with the knowledge,
leadership skills and intellect to
positively shape the future of

Johnson said.

alcohol. They portrayed him as an
abused child, given beer in his
baby bottle, drinking hard liquor
with his dad as a pre-teen, and
eventually graduating to a herion
addiction as an adult. Defense
counsel cited this drug induced
victimization as a mitigating cir-
cumstance in favor of a sentence
less than death. Harris County
Assistant District Attorneys Sid
Crowley and Denise Crawford
argued that Beavers had
deliberately killed Odie and was a
continuing threat to society, both
elements needed for a jury to
sentence him to death. They
pointed to Beavers' prior robbery
convictions as evidence of this
during the punishment phase of
the trial. As always, the decision
of Beavers' fate rested in the
hands of twelve jurors.
At 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday,
September 14,1988 the jury dozen
retreated to a makeshift delibera-
tion room on the third floor of the
