S.B.A. provides Pictorial
Directory; sponsors golf
tourney, Halloween party
by Ed "Scoop" Goldberg
The S.B.A. has never been
known to sit on its big fat budget.
So, sparing no expense, the Scho-
lastic Recognition Committee
(better known as Kerry Hagen)
has been authorized to mail at-
tractive certificates of recognition
to all students who are on the
Deans List retroactive to Fall
1982. Amaze and delight your
friends and family, make the
grades and win the prize.
The next step on our shopping
list is the Pictorial Directory. Free
to the students will be a book con-
taining the photographs of all the
students, hopefully matched with
the correct names, addresses and
telephone numbers. If you feel
your name or any other informa-
tion is not Correct, then change it.
A box will be situated outside the
S.B.A. office on the third floor
until the book goes to print. For
further information contact Louis
Chapman in the Annotations of-
fice.
Once again the S.B.A. has out-
done itself. At the direction of
Tod Yeslow and Mary Hamilton,
the S.B.A. has commissioned Dr.
Rocket and the Sisters of Mercy to
perform at the now infamous
S.B.A. Halloween Party. Tickets
will be on sale for $4 throughout
the month of October. Incredible
and unbelievable prizes will be
given for the best costumes.
Rumors have it that Abracadabra
Magic Shop is offering a student
discount, so plan ahead to keep
from becoming a behind.
The S.B.A. is sponsoring,
under the direction of Joe Luce,
the annual S.T.C.L. Student/
Alumni Golf Tournament. It will
be held on Friday morning, Oc-
tober 7, 1983, at the Friendswood
Country Club. Entry fee is $20
which includes cart, fee and li-
quor. This reporter feels a good
game of golf is as good for your
legal career as a good grade in
contracts, so get some good
strokes and rub a few elbows at
this annual event.
EXTRA, EXTRA! This report-
er has learned from reliable
sources that Dean Jones has been
negotiating for parking privileges
in the new building across the
street. After 4:00 and for a small
fee students will be able to park in
safety and security. Speaking of
security, a new guard will be
posted all day in the $1.65 lot on
Austin and Polk. Any students
seeking more personal help may
ask for an escort by the existing
guards in the building.
The S.B.A. wishes to apologize
for the cancelling of the Fall Pic-
nic. Refunds are available in the
S.B.A. office until October 1. For
all of you who had a good time
that weekend at Spott Park . . .
you were at the wrong picnic!
by Lynn Cherry
All students are invited to at-
tend the Sixth Annual Alumni
Professional Orientation Day
which will be held at South Texas
on Saturday, October 15. Ron
Wardell chairs the committee this
year and Freshman Senator Deb-
bie Petryzak and President Lynn
Cherry will be working on this
worthwhile event. This half-day
workshop brings together small
groups of students and practicing
attorneys to discuss various areas
of legal specialization, require-
ments, problems, expectations
and day to day experiences. The
majority of the speakers are South
Texas graduates and all par-
ticipating judges and attorneys are
well-versed in their particular
fields.
The programs will begin at
10:00 a.m., Saturday, October 15.
The speakers have been arranged
in sequence to minimize conflicts
for those who wish to attend more
than one session. Most of these
workshops will last for one hour.
Those interested in Criminal
Law will have an opportunity to
meet with personnel from the
Harris County District Attorney's
Office from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00
a.m. and discuss potential careers
as Prosecutors. To ensure total
equality, Ray Bass III and Will
Gray will follow from 11:00 a.m.
to 12:00 p.m. with the session on
the Defense Attorney's views of
Criminal Law.
Students wishing to enter the
fields of Oil and Gas Law or Real
Property Transactions/Sales will
have an opportunity to meet and
discuss potential professions in
these areas from 10:00 to 11:00
a.m. A session on Family Law will
be presented from 11:00 until
12:00 with Judge Henry G. Sche-
ble of the 245th District Court and
J. Huey O'Toole. Both of these
men are highly regarded in the
area of domestic relations and
their thoughts and experiences
have been well received by
students in the past.
Representing the area of Inter-
national Law will be Marshall M.
Taheri and F. Jane Yount. These
attorneys have prepared an ex-
cellent presentation on the topic
and are well-versed to explore this
area of the law. Wills, Trusts, and
Estates will feature Judge James
E. Scanlan of Probate Court #3 of
Harris County and Elton S. Lip-
nick. This workshop will begin at
12:00 and run until 1:00 p.m.
Due to the demand from stu-
dents and attorneys alike, the ses-
sion on Personal Injury and
Worker's Compensation has been
expanded to two hours this year.
It is scheduled to begin at 11:00
a.m. and the session will break in-
to separate workshops for those
whose interests are particularly
channelized. Those leading this
year's discussion will be William
B. "Ben" Adair, Jim Richards,
Charles R. "Bob" Dun and John
W. Turner.
All of these fine attorneys are
giving their time in order to help
South Texas students understand
the areas of the law which are
open to them. The Alumni Asso-
ciation and the Student Bar
Association hope that every stu-
dent will avail themselves the op-
portunity to meet with these men
and women on Saturday, October
15. Further information will be
provided on the student boards in
the lobby as plans are finalized.
Those with questions may contact
Debbie Petryzak or Lynn Cherry,
the student chairpersons.
