Eighteen teams participate in second annual Mock Trial
Competition on February 25; Poe and Schaffer winners
by David W.Holman
The second annual Fisher, Gal-
lagher, Perrin and Lewis Mock
Trial Competition concluded with
an energetic final round on
February 25. Eighteen teams par-
ticipated in the intramural event,
which is sponsored by the law firm
for which it is named.
The winners of the elimination
tournament were second year stu-
dents Lloyd Poe and Bob Schaf-
fer. Finishing a close second were
Lester Vance and Frank Mann.
Mr. Schaffer characterized his
team's victory as "tremendous"
and a "great experience for
anyone who has any desire to get
into trial law".
Judging the final round were
Wayne Fisher, past president of
the Texas Bar Association; Bob
McConn and Shelton Smith. All
are attorneys with Fisher, Gal-
lagher, Perrin and Lewis, a
distinguished Houston firm
specializing in civil litigation. Mr.
Fisher said that all of the final
round participants "should make
fine trial lawyers".
This year's problem involved
products liability litigation. The
same problem will be used in the
American Trial Lawyer's Associa-
tion (ATLA) Competition to be
held March 19-20 in Denver.
Chief Justice Frank Evans speaker
at Phi Delta Phi's lunch hour forum
by O. Kenneth Dodd
Wood Inn, the South Texas
chapter of Phi Delta Phi, had the
honor of hosting Chief Justice
Frank Evans of the First Court of
Appeals at their first monthly
lunch hour forum on March 10.
The meeting was open to all and
beverages were provided free to
those who brought their lunch.
After a short introduction by
the Phi Delta Phi Magister Valerie
Lord, Chief Justice Evans made a
statement after which the floor
was open to questions. In his
statement, he said that the First
and Fourteenth Court of Appeals
have been assured they will have
priority in completion of their sec-
tion of the new building now go-
ing up next door and expect to be
moving in by November. After a
coin toss between Chief Justice
Evans and Brown, it was decided
that the Fourteenth Court of Ap-
peals would move into the
eleventh floor and the First Court
of Appeals would move into the
tenth floor. Chief Justice Evans
also reiterated his hope that the
Courts of Appeals will be able to
expand the current internship pro-
gram greatly once they move into
the new building and have the
space. Citing the massive increase
in their case load with the granting
of criminal appeallate jurisdic-
tion, he said that it would have
been impossible for them to have
dealt with such an onslaught with-
out the help of their interns.
Following questions from those
assembled, it was found that the
Courts of Appeals, once in the
new building, will not be utilizing
the South Texas library to any
great extent and for the most part
will be self-sufficient. He also said
that students from South Texas
will be encouraged to attend hear-
ings and weekly lists of cases will
be posted so the student will know
what is being heard and when.
Chief Justice Curtiss Brown of
the Fourteenth Court of Appeals
had been scheduled to attend the
Phi Delta Phi forum as well, but
had to cancel out at the last mo-
ment. It is hoped that he will be
able to attend at a future time.
