SILK-WORM LGGS.
Agricultural Department is Givinji

Ask for Them.
Washington D. C Dr. Howard
the chief lug expert of the Agricnl
tural Department has begun to
scatter the eggs of the Chinese silk-
worm broadcast over the south.
They are sent through the mail done
up in small packages. Anybody
living south of Mason and Dixon's
line can get an assignment of these
egg merely by writting to Dr. Ho-
ward and assuring him that there
is a white mulberry tree on the
farm of the writer.
If the seekerof Chinese silk-worm
eggs has no white mulberry tree he
can L' t a plant of that valuable
s-pecit s of the t;egetab!e kingdom bj
writing to the Chief of the Forestry
Division of the Agricultural Depart-
me;it. This official Prof. Pinchot
Iik- Dr. Howard has been instruct
ed by Secretary Wilson to supply
promptly every request made by
t' c farmers of the south for the

is a
domesticated animal and refuses tc
e.tt the leaves of our mulberry trees.
Its taste for the white variety is the
result of more than 4000 years'
cultivation. Experiments at the
Agricultural Department under the
personal supervision of Secretary
Wilson have shown that when the
imported Chinese silk-worm makes
a meal on a leaf from a common
Arnorican mulberry tree one of two
regretable results follow: Thesilk-
uorm either dies or the product of
its mysterious loom is not silk. The
. . . !
worm from China would bore his
way out oi nis siiKen cocoon n ne
had a chance and would flutter
around just Ions enough to find his '

mato. This color would boa modest j
drab the Chinese worm's cocoon is
so valuable for its silk that few of i
its kind are permitcd to merge from!

me crysaus siaic. now 11103 are
killed in China and those parts of
Europe where silk culture is carried
on successfully is not known.
Secretary Wilson has devised his
own means of checking the develop-
ment of the worm in the crysalis
stage. He puts cocoons in an air-
tight box 'and then pours a half
ounce of bisulphide of carbon in
the box. This does' the business.
The creature that is then half worm
and half butterfly dies and the
thousands of silken threads or
filaments ;.re then not cut by the
butterfly boring its way out through
the largo end of the cocoon.
There ar? by the way according
to Secretary Wilson's count 1400
yards of isilken threand in each
cocoon developed at the Agricultural
Department. This thread is about
the size of tjie thread spun by a
spider. Secretary Wilson believes
that the small farmers in the south
will find the culture of the Chinese
silk-worm profitable after they learn
how to do it. Some of the white
mulberry plants that ho scattered
through that part of the country
three ye.'rs ago are now large enough
to supply the necessary food to the
worm and he is anxious Jor those
who h-.ve the trees to begin feedin
the worm3. He is having prepared
a detailed description of how to
treat the worms so as to get the best
results.
