the cars were manipulated rather ir-

The police are making an inroad

The wholesalo houses of this city

Denisonites claim a big boom for
their town, but somo way or other
their real estate transfers don't show
up with Sherman's. But still Sher-

To State Senator E.. 0. Douglas, at Anr
tin Today,V
The following petition, signed by
the leading wholesale merchants of
Sherman was this afternoon forward-
ed to State Senator E. G. Douglass:
Sbkbmam, March lltb, 1887.
To the Honorable Legislature, State
of Texas:
Whereas, by a recont reported de-
cision of the Supreme Court of the
United States, the law taxing
drummers representing merch-
ants in' ' other states and
operating in this state, has
been declared unconstitutional in the
case of
"Sabine Bobbinson vs. the taxing
district of Shelby county, Tennes-
see," and,
Whereas, If such is the caso the
merchants of Texas who are selling
goods through drummers wil{ be at a
i;reat disadvantage in competing with
merchants of other Btates, and
Whereas, Wo believe it would
be unjust to levy the tax
upon our merchants, unless
he same could bo placed
upon the non-resident merchants
also:
Therefore we would ask your hon-
orable body to at once repeal the law
imposing ^rummer's license taxto
'¡he end that all can be on an equal
ooting, and no advantage given to
any.
Very respectfully,
and here follows the names of eigh
,een firms in the city who employ
drummers, and who are interested in
the premises.
This potition arises from a publica
lion of an articlo in a Memphis paper
of a late issuo. Bobbinson was a
drummer for a Cincinnati stationery
firm and was fined for failure to pay
the license which a law of tho state of
Tennessee guarantees tho taxing dis
trict of Shelby couuty (city of Mom-
phis) in levying. He appealed and
the judgment of the court of the tax-
ing district affirmed. The case was
taken to the United States Supreme
ourt and the decision refforred to
turned.
A protracted meeting is going on at
the A. M. E. church, will last until

where they will send in their report
on Sherman. Mr. Hollingsworth ex
prensed himself to a Reoister repre-
sentative as being well pleased with
tho city, and estimates its population
at about 11,000 or a littlo over.
If you want anything in tbo jewelry
line give Ely <fc Cook a call.
Light Needed.
The Reoister is inclined to again
call the attention of the board of al
derraen to tho fact that the bridgo
over Post Oak croek, near tho collar
factory, on the Whitesboro road, is a
very dangorous place after nightfall,
and an electric light somewhere near
it would be of great BOrvice to alargo
number of people.

Last night Bill Krauser, who runs
a restaurant on North Travis street,
was made tho victim of a peculiar
joke, which has a criminal to it, but
which however does not destroy its
funniness. Bill had a olnybsnk pony
which was the pride of his heart, and
which he had in fine condition,
and last night he locked him up
in his stable at his residenoe
place on Gray's Hill and this morning
went out to get him as usual, but the
petted and beloved claybank wasn't
there, but in its stead stood the bay
remnants of what, had once been a
pony. Bill was mad; rearing mad,
and didn't care who knew it, but that
made no difference and didn't
materialize his pony out of
the animated hat rack that
swayed too and fro w^i the gentle
gulf breeze. Later oiffn the day a
colored individual made his appear-
ance and claimed the bay animal,
stating that he had been straying
about for four or five days, and that
he supposed somebody had picked
him up and just coneluded to swap
him off. This didn't answer as a
salm to Krauser'B wounded feelings.
