Yesterday morning a German by
the name of Gustaff Heidrich went to
the dryg establishment of G. AV. Mar
shall and called for ten cents worth
of morphine, and it was given to him.
Later on at night, probably 9:80
o'clock, he came boek and stated that
he wanted something to make his
wife sleep. He was given a
grain of morphine divided into
fo«r doses, and he took
this back and found lier lying on tbe
floor frothing at the mouth. He at
once gave the alatón, and one of the
mill employes who lives on the same
street, East Houston, came up town
in post haste for medical assistance,
and procured Dr. S. C. Nesbit, who
went at once to the Bcene and applied
all the remedies that he could apply.
She /lingered on during the night
in a dead stupor and in which she
died this morning shortly after 9
o'clock. The coronor wes notified at
once and a jury of inquest summouod.
They at onco repairod to the sceno of
the unfortunate occurrence and the
following evidence was adduced be
fore them.
dr. s. c. ne3dit
being duly sworn deposed and said:
■(I was called to see Mrs. Pauline
Heidrich at 10 o'clock last night, tbe
3rd of March, 1887. I found her in
a dying condition, and on inquiry
learned from "her husband that she
had taken ten cents worth of mor-
phine at noon yesterday, eleven hours
before I called to see her. I remained
with hor all night, and usod all rem
edies to counteract the effects. She
died at 9 o'clock
this morning; From the best infor-
mation 1 could get 1 think sho took
between four and five grains. I have
the label that was on tho powder, it
reads "morphine," and tbo name is
now in possession of tho court. That
amount wub sufficient to kill a person
not accustomod to taking it. ,I have
no doubt that sho died from the ef
fects of an overdose of morphine."
gustaff HEIDRICil,
husband of the deceased, being sworn
deposed and said, (through E. Ar
noldi, interpreter):
"I did not eco my wifo take tho
morphino. I was outside of the houso
at tbe timo, but "when I came in I
saw the glass that sho took it from. I
bought teu cent's worth of morphine
yesterday morning from Marshall's
drug store. Thoro was nobody in tbe
room at tbe time sbo took it. When I
wout into the houso she told me that
she had taken it, and that it did not
tasto very good. She had been suffor
ing with the piles for about three
weeks. I think at the time she took
tbe morphine she was suffering so
with pain that sho did not know what
she was doing. Tbe deceased was ¡14
years of age. I never told tho do
ceased how much of tho morphino to
take, as she know moro about it than
I did. It was about ten houra, I
think, from tho time she took
the poison until tbe doctor camo.
After she had tufcen tho morphine she
intimated to mo that our domestic ro
lations had always been ploasant.
This was about '2 o'cleck in tho after
noon. Sho was a little out of head
at tbis time." After a few minutes
consultation tbo jury returned tb
following
vehdict:
"We, tho jury, sworn to enquire
into the manner, moans, causo, time,
place and circumstances of the doath
of Pauline Heidrich, find thnt sbo
came to her doath on tbe morning of
March 4th, 1837, at her rosidonco iu
East Sherman, from tbo effects of an
overdose of morphine taken by her
self with innocent intention. Given
uuder our hands March 4th, 1887. .

Bad Boy*.
The nianagers of the show at pres
ent on South Travis street have been
troubled a great deal within the last
few nights by having boys throwing
rocks into the crowd as they came out
of the tent. As yet no ono has been
hurt but, it ia not likely that it will be
so if the mischief is kept up.
Who Threw the Itock ?
Chas. Brodshaw, a young man just
in from Delaware Bend, came into
the Union depot )ast night and dis
played an ugly gash in bis head,
which he said had been occasioned by
someono ho did not know who, throw-
ing a rock at him from near the Paci

Iteforuiatory Needed.
Evidences of the need of a reform
atory in Texas are too great to be
denied, ond the people of Sherman
don't havo to leave home to see it. It
is absolutely necessary that something
bo done to curb tho way ward inclina-
tions of several boys and girls grow
ing up in tbis and other oities of
North Texas.
Play Parly.
The residence of Ed Goben corner
of East and Mulberry streets, was the
scene last evening, of a ploasant social
event, in which a very largo number
of young folks participated. Tho mer
rimént was kept up until a reasonably
late hour. Mr. Goben leaves for
Paris today, which is to temporarily
be his stopping place.

The ladies of tho Willow Street
Methodist church gave a pleasant
entertainment in tho way of a supper
at their church edifice last night, on
which a very largo crowd were iu at
tendance. Both socially ond pecun-
iarily tho aliair was a success, and
quite a neat sum, which goes to tbo
support of tho clergy, was realized.
On a Hoom.
Sherman is in a moro prosperous
condition today than ever before in
its history. Roal estate is steadily
advancing in value and everything
is becoming solid, substantial and
permanent, and tho contiguous torri
tory is sufficiently developed to insure
it au abuudant and healthy support.
It no longer depends upon cotingen

foundation.
