What type of wood and which wood
preservative make the best combi-
nation for your patio or yard en-
closure?
The answer to this double-bar-
reled question can be derived from
studies qpnducted at Texas A&M
College bv an architectural re-
searcher of the Texas Engineering
r>periment Station. Specifically,
the study iriade by Robert F.

concerned with the ability of. cer-

where they'll ante up half the cost

But most important of all is that
the fence be designed so thst It is
complimentary to^both yout home
end your neighbor's home because
that will give it built-in friendli-
ness. It's possible, even with a.
high fertce that's designed to give
your yard complete privacy.
The high but friendly fence
could, for example, ..be a ' solid
board, design, the most .enclosing!
fence style of all. with Just a few
small touches to make it light and|
airy. • • . ' 1 ' *'f
Sparing the boards a quarter
inch apart—or perhaps only an
eighth of an inch—will make the
fence appear-much lighter in de
s gn without destroying the style's j
effectiveness
The proper fence, finish will go
a long way itv. creating a good
neighbor policy, too. It's generally
a smart idea to stay- away from
colors when painting and stick to
clear, sparkling white. White will
make, an ^attractive backdrop for
plantings on both sides of the
fence and is complimentary to any
atyle and color of house. Or. tjf.
hoth houses are rustic or con-
temporary in character, a neutral,
wood-colored stain is' a good bet
For top appearance and perform
ance, the fence should be built of
a proven outdoor wood.
