He will, according to Lillis.
"We've been playing a lot of young

to look at a lot of our people this last

Lillis said if Kerfeld had arrived
earlier, he would have replaced
Ryan instead of Dawley.

Easier clubbed a grand slam
homer for the second time in three
games. He now has five in his career.
“Baseball is kind of a streaky-
game and I’m in one of those good
kind of streaks right now,” said
Easier. “It’s been a long season but a
few good things are starting to hap-
pen.
“We really put the hits on the
scoreboard. Some nights are like
that. You hit and you just can’t stop
hitting. The whole team was doing
it.”
Tim Lollar went eight innings,
allowing only two hits. Mark Clear
gave up only one hit in an inning of
relief.
Rice blasted a two-run homer in
the first inning and Stewart loaded
the bases in the third inning before
being relieved by Chris Welch.
Easier hit a fastball just over the
leftfield wall off Welch.
Bill Buckner went four for five
with three singles and a double, and
Wade Boggs had three singles to lift
his American League leading batting
average to .364

Manager Bob Lillis of the Houston
Astros called on him for a relief stint
against the Chicago Cubs.
Kerfeld responded with 4 1-3 inn-
ings of scoreless relief and the Astros
went on to a 7-2 triumph over the
Cubs.

after being recalled from Tucson.
“I was up before but I didn’t do a
good job and that’s why I was sent
down, but I was pleased with the way
I threw today.”
He relieved winner Bill Dawley,
3-2, who relieved starter Nolan Ryan,
but Kerfeld needed ninth-inning help
from Dave Smith.
Kerfeld retired nine in a row
before allowing two hits in the eighth
and then departed in the ninth after
giving up another hit and a walk.
"I had just gotten off the plane and
got to the ball park in the second inn-
ing,” he said. “I didn’t anticipate I’d
pitch. But as soon as I got there, they
told me to warm up and I went in.”
Kerfeld decided to challenge the
hitters this time.
"When I was up before, I think I
walked nine guys and seven of them
scored," he said. “This time I decid-
ed to challenge ’em. If they get you,
they get you, if they don't, they
don’t.”
Ryan took an 11-3 lifetime record
into the game against the Cubs but
had to leave in the first inning when
his shoulder tightened up after allow-
ing two runs.
“No use taking a chance," said
Houston Manager Bob Lillis. “He
was all right when he threw on the
side the other day.”
Cubs Manager Jim Frey called it
“one of those strange days. When we
got two runs off Ryan and I saw him
walk off the mound, I felt pretty
good. I thought we were in line for
another good day, but everything
stopped there.”
Dawley retired the final batter in
the first inning and gave up singles in
each of the other three innings he
worked. Rookie Glenn Davis tied it in
the second with a two-run homer, his
12th.
In the fifth, Kevin Bass singled and
Mark Bailey doubled. Lillis called on

It’s been a long lost season for the i
Boston Red Sox, but they’re on a
power surge right now that they
could have used earlier in the season. '
The Red Sox battered four Texas
Ranger pitchers for 19 hits Monday
night in an 11-2 victory, including a
grand slam homer by Mike Easier
and a two-run homer by Jim Rice.
Boston has clubbed 14 homers in its
last 9 games.
"We’re hitting now, but it came a
little late,” said Manager John
McNamara.
For Boston, it was the Red Sox’s
sixth victory in their last 24 games
Boston is 7-19 since the brief players’
strike.
Easier is not the man you want to
pitch to with bases loaded.
